Solved with details: 3rd generation 4Runner digital clock revived (tooth surgery)

I haven't logged in for years, but I just wanted to say, long term, that the repair above failed about 3 months ago. So, I will try again, but I'm glad this writeup is still here so that I can follow my own pictures!

This is amazing. I have been wondering about tackling this. Toyoyta of Oakland told me $300 for the clock and $100 for labor. It's a clock?!?!

MOM, this is a fantastic thread and I think I've seen it referenced on the internet (linked to by others outside the forum)

I can't wait to do this to my clock when I pull my dash/center console to upgrade to LEDs this weekend

Mine started working again all by itself. I just swapped the old head unit out for a new double din touch model. Didn't even bother with the clock because I never really needed it. Button everything back up and the clock is working. I'm sure it will die again soon but it was still pretty funny.

did anybody have a burnt spot like this? I don't wanna try to solder this thing if I'll just be wasting my time with some burnt out internals.

Great write up! Should be stickied for those looking to take apart the center of the dash.

Before you disassemble the console, you can actually PUSH the clock loose with finger, Then you do not have to fiddle with a screwdriver and possibly damage the insert. I did it by accident-it pops loose. Then undo console and pull connector off.

I am going to send my 1998 4Runner clock off to an ebay site that repairs them basically in the manner described above for $16.

I will everyone know how this service works out.

Update, Well went to UPS 2 day service it to the guy and he lives in Idaho (middle of nowhere LOL) and well $53 if you want 2 day mail service...so I sent it ground service so there is more than one of these ebay dealers that repair these clocks so if your in a hurry you may wish to find a vendor not in the middle of Idaho.... I can just see some UPS guy driving a tiny clock package up a snow covered mountain hiking 20 miles of a wilderness to a cabin in the mountains in 12 ft of snow.. anyway just a FYI.
