Source for remote?

So my experiment of trying the all-in-one remote key didn't work out for me

Which leaves me with only one remote and that one with a broken key loop. Not a huge deal, right now I have it in a little nylon pouch with a key ring, but I'd like to get at least one more remote (I know they come from the factory with two, but when I bought mine it had only one remote. Also no floor mats, no owners manual and no cargo cover. :mad: I guess I should consider myself lucky I have a spare tire, jack and lug wrench.)

So are there any other remotes that will work with the 4runner? I'm probably wanting to stick to a Toyota factory part after getting ripped off by Extra Partss and their cheap, low quality copies. I know how to program a remote, thanks to the good folks here, so now I just need to find a place to get a decent remote unit.

Let me clarify a little...

Since it's not apparent what I am asking:

I realize I can go onto Ebay or other sites and buy a replacement remote that is identical to the one I have. What I'm wondering is, for example, if I get a Camry or Corolla or Sienna remote, can I program it and use it like the 4runner remote? I understand I might lose the ability to roll down the rear window but to be honest, I rarely ever use that feature on my existing remote (in fact, usually the only reason I use it is to show somebody "look what my remote can do!" :D )

From my cursory search, it seems like 4runner-specific remotes run $40-$60 and up, while Corolla/Camry remotes can often be found for $25 - $30.

I'll apologize in advance if this question has been asked before, the problem with searching a forum this active is that any search request often returns hundreds of responses that are too exhaustive to read through.
 
To be honest with you I am not 100% of what will work. The actual keys may not program well (Toyota has a few security measures as well as different sets of transponder chips that are designed not to be cross compatible to make it more difficult to "make false keys" or something like that...) the Key Fobs I would suspect are a little less strict, but again I don't know how the system differentiates one key fobs vs. the other. I know you can use some rounded rectangle ones (like the ones for 3rd & 4th gen 4Runners) and they can be used on a couple cars, but I don't know which ones work best, ect.
 
Im having the same issue. my loop is broken. well, half of it is. one side of the case is broken/missing. I put a couple layers of duct tape to help support the remaining loop.

I would like to find a good cheap case to just put my guts into.

You could do what I'm doing, as a temporary measure use a "remote skin" that will contain your remote and hook onto a key ring:

I picked mine up at a local locksmith's shop.
 
I'd like to try a Corolla or Camry remote but before I buy one I'd like to try one out to make sure I can get it to work.

Programming the remote is not difficult, I did it with my (crappy - don't buy one!) all-in-one remote/key I got from Ebay.
 
When I looked into this earlier this year I discovered that certain Camry remotes 'May' work, but I ended up just buying a used 4 runner remote off eBay.

Yeah, I can't figure that one out either. I can understand somebody taking the factory mats out and putting in aftermarket mats but to sell a vehicle with no mats at all? Why?

Ditto for the owner's manual. Yes, I know you can download one, but who throws away the owner's manual (and why?)

I ended up finding an owner's manual on eBay for about $30.

I have the Weathertech Digital Fit floor liners that I paid $200 for, and I accidently threw away my stock mats when I was cleaning up my basement. I was planning to swap the stock mats from my 08 into my 03 when I traded it in, but it had none, so my truck got traded in with no floor mats, because they sold me a truck with no floor mats. No way they were getting my weathertechs, they went right in the 08

I had this same problem. I left my remote in in the junk drawer for a year and a half because I was afraid that I would lose it.

Auto Zone sells the (empty) cases for our remotes. I think they were about $15.00. The remote labeled "Camry" is an exact match to ours. I did have to use a dremel to shave off a couple of millimeters on the bottom of the inside of it to make a little more room for the circuit board. It has been so nice to have it again.
 
Hey Martin, I know you may not want to try fixing it, but what happened with the all-in-one key that "didn't work out"? Maybe I can help? Since I went through that ordeal, but I have a fully functional all-in-one with no problems now that I've sorted the issues out. Cost me an extra $5 for a new remote shell, but that's it.

Also I have no good sources for you, but if you buy a remote by searching for "[your year] 4runner key fob" on google, and buy something for more than $10/not from china, I think you'll probably be ok.
