Here's what I did:
1.) Go on ebay, buy a Toyota blank with a chip in it. Usually about $10 for a transponder key. Usually about $29 if you want the transponder key with remote (like we get when we buy the vehicle -NON LIMITED).
2.) Take key to Home Depot, get cut for $1.00
2.) Get the techstream software cable from ebay (you can program many things with this including windows up/down & seatbelt chime). Can be had for around $39 if you "Make an offer" to a seller.
3.) Program your new key.
Done.

Hmmm interesting. So along with the key programming you can customize your own vehicle with the techstream. Better idea.

Great post, I want my key programmed for the window roll down but don't like going to the dealer, the programming cable looks like a good deal.
I had a regular key cut for my 2012 TE for a couple of bucks, when I go surfing I put the regular in my wetsuit and leave the fob in the car so I can start the car once I get back in. Not as secure as I would like but the regular key will roll down the back window which is handy for when I get out of the water.
I wanted to mention that you should be careful with the magnetic key holders, at least in San Francisco magnetic key holders or the bumper stash are no longer any good because we had a series of car thefts from people watching surfers stash keys and then once you get in the water people steal your car! I always make a show of stashing my key in my wetsuit now.

I share the frustration. I bought a valet key for my 2013 TE on ebay for $25 with the chip. Had a swap meet guy cut it for $2. Now a local locksmith wants $50 and the dealer wants $75 to program it. I tried a number of key registration procedures I found in the forum and on line with no luck.
I bought the Techstream software and cable ($28), but the version 7.2 looks like it only works to register a Smart Key, not a regular one. I keep watching the forum hoping to find a better way before saying $#!^ and giving up.
I want to buy a CO2 bottle with the money, not a key. Maybe I'll just tape my $55 key to the CO2 tank and forget it.

Just joined to forum today. Really appreciated your post. Before I purchase this cable and software, just wanted to verify that the software provides complete instructions on how to do the programming, including the key. Does it?

Someone earlier reported that unlocking the door with the key disables the alarm on all Toyotas - not true for the early Tundras. My fob died in Sams club parking lot and would not unlock the door. I opened it with the key and the alarm went off. Starting the engine cancelled the alarm, along with the concerned onlookers!
can anyone confirm that this is still the case for 5th gen, or something similar?
i'd like to get a generic key made to carry with me when i'm out riding or whatnot, so that i don't have to worry about sweat or moisture corroding the electronics inside the key fob. just need it to be able to unlock the doors.

While out of town on vacation, I lost my keys. The full replacement expense was over $700. How? Nalley Toyota in Roswell, GA said $91.00 but you must tow your vehicle to the dealership to validate ownership. Once onsite, the price went up to $504 for the master key + labor to reseed key code. On arriving home, the other keys had to be reprogrammed by Toyota for the new code for another $160.00. Add the $50 tow fee and we have a whopping $714. Had Nalley Toyota explained this to me in our phone call, I would have borrowed my son's car and driven home to NC to get the spare keys. The "bait and switch" tactic and the simple lack of care from the Toyota dealership has changed my opinion of Toyota to very negative.

Hi all, I'm with the guys who have read this whole post and are more confused than ever. My situation is that I just bought a 2008 4runner and it came with only the valet key - the valet key has a chip/transponder and does everything except unlock/lock the glovebox.
After researching, my understanding is that a new valet or master key can be cut and programmed only if you have a master key to start with. If you have a master, you can purchase a transponder key cheaply (Amazon - about $7.00), then have it cut and programmed by many locksmiths fairly cheaply - even some Wal-marts can do the programming/cutting. If you take it to a dealer to have them supply a key and do the cutting/programming it can be ridiculous.
In my case, with just a valet key, I cannot have another key cut and programmed. First, I have to have the computer/immobilizer in the vehicle flashed or re-set, then they can create a new master or valet key - the dealer wants $200.00 to re-set the immobilizer and another $100.00 for the key work.
After calling around to locksmiths, I found someone who claims they can re-set the immobilizer and cut/program a new master key for $75.00 - said it takes him about 30 minutes to re-set the immobilizer. Other locksmith's said they could do this service but they were not much cheaper than the dealer.
Hope this info is near correct and helps.
Addendum: One other comment - the keys are not actually "programmed", the vehicle is set to accept the id in the chip on the key. So whoever does the work will need to have the vehicle.
