The cable on my spare tire carrier is frayed and I'm driving around (locally) with no spare. Is it feasible to replace the cable or do I need to get a new carrier?

Im fairly certain i threw mine away when I cut out my spare tire mount in preparation for custom goodness. Ill take a look at home when I get back this weekend. If I do not respond just shoot me a pm and remind me. If I have it still then its all yours.....paying it forward.

This^ I had to replace my entire unit....

Are there any preventive measures you would recommend in order to keep it from going bad? Like lowering/raising it once every 6 months or something?

I'm driving around with the same, except mine seems to work fine. I gashed a tire and have my full size spare on now so I'm driving with no backup. However, I did just get 4 stock wheels/tires for $160 off craigslist. A little corrosion needs some attention, nonetheless a steal.

I usually lower mine down before and after winter and spray the cable with a lithium grease to ward off corrosion and keep things oiled.

The updated version is a chain. The cable version is outdated. My 2008 cable was replaced by the dealer with a chain when it frayed.

Ecally is right..... My replacement unit was a chain and is significantly better/more durable than the wire unit it replaced..... Lube once a year or so and it should last the life of the vehicle....
