speaker options

any problems with fitting? modifying of door panel?

No problem with fit in the stock location. Hardest part was removing the speaker from the housing because of that industrial strength glue they used. Epoxied the tweeters using the stock bracket.

removing the factory speaker? does the alpine secure to the mount the same way? i just may get those. i'll keep my OE tweets.

That's a Coax speaker, not component. Why are you epoxying tweeters? Am I missing something?

He has to be referencing a component set. I just used industrial velcrow to mount my tweeters to the oem bracket.

The new Type-R stuff with neodymium magnets are AWESOME speakers for the money. You definitely want to use the supplied tweeters as a pair with the woofer though. The crossover and all wiring makes it mindless to install. If you don't want to mess with tweeter integration (it's very minimal and directs sound much better IMO) you can get the coax version and it's a bit easier to install.

My bad. I searched type R Alpines and didn't even notice they were Coax. You're right I am referring to the component set. I thought that price was cheaper than I paid. They don't have them anymore but here they are at Sonic

Yeah, those definitely look like a good choice for my coming upgrade. Alpine amp already in hand. For the record, Amazon has them cheaper, 153.90 free shipping (not Prime):

The Alpines are nice, but depending on your amp you can get more useful power out of a two ohm impedance speaker.... Like any Infinity speaker. Just FYI.

Additionally they have a higher sensitivity than the Alpines. Unless your amp is over 100rms at 4ohms you may get better and louder sound from the Infinitys.

I'm more worried about keeping my amp from melting the speaker than I am about "getting more useful power out of it". All other things being equal, that increase in power comes with a decrease in sound quality, FYI. 2-ohm speakers are cheaper to build, fewer windings on the coil, etc.

being that i am not that good at electrical stuff, the scion head unit doesn't have provision to connect an amp. there are 3 connector spots open, but no connector. how would i connect the amp?

IMO,

There are many infinity speakers that come in 4 ohms. I'm running Kappas with an Alpine amp at 4x75W RMS to the doors.

For four channel speakers I don't really think 2ohms is superior. I run a sub at 2 ohms because it is a class D amp and although the power isn't as clean at 2 ohms it doesn't really matter for the sub channel.

OP,

If you are going to buy a new head unit and new amp then go with higher end consumer speakers like Alpine type R or Infinity Kappa.

But if you want to use the Scion head unit still and want an affordable upgrade that sounds very very good then buy the Alpine Universal Power Pack mini amp (which should have slander line inputs) for $150 among with a set of quality medium power speakers such as Infinity Reference or Alpine C.

Btw one of the downsides of those OEM Scion Amps is they usually have around a 45db s/n ratio vs 105 or 110db with a nice Alpine or Kenwood Excellon unit. So personally I don't see the point in spending the extra cash for a better amp and speakers (Kappa or R) when you will have only medium clarity sound out of that head unit.

The reality is that an upgrade to the Alpine Power Pack which I believe is something like 4x40 RMS asking with some Infinity Reference speakers will sound very very good and still be affordable.

are there any OE replacements from other toyota cars that will fit our trucks? or do i have to go aftermarket?

IMO the closest aftermarket to OEM (& better quality) would be Infinity Reference speakers. They will work with your Scion unit with our without an additional amp. The Reference line is designed to be able to work with only a head unit but I still recommend at least getting an Alpine Power Pack.

my deal is i don't know where to connect the amp to? the scion unit doesn't have any rca's to connect it to. it has 2 spaces on back for factory connectors and that's it.

Forget the Scion HU. HU's are so cheap today. Also forget the 2ohm. If you run 2ohm speakers off the HU It'll get too hot & keep shutting down or worse. You need a good amp for that & it will run hot too.

I had 4ohm Infinity Reference's in my Corolla & they were great. With a Pioneer Premier HU & CD changer (yea old school) JL Audio Amp & sub.

I had these JL C2's in my old Accord & they were better than Infinity Reference's I had in the Corolla. I will probably be putting these in the 4Runner. My 13 yo Pioneer 3way 6 3/4's are finally staring to die.

Speakers blow when they are under powered and someone cranks up the volume. They aren't able to reproduce the distorted signals they're receiving and crap out.
So, matching an amp to the speakers capabilities or having a slightly more powerful amp is what you'd like to have ideally.

I won't argue that 2 ohm speakers are cheaper to make, I don't know if that's true or not.
I would ask one question: if they're cheaper to make, why do you not find more 2 ohm speakers out there in stock vehicles?
What is the Difference Between 2 and 4 Ohms? | Learning Center | Sonic Electronix

Looks like you were right about being cheaper to produce. But as far as sound quality goes you won't notice a difference most likely. Additionally, a 4 ohm will sound better than 2 at the same power, but when you increase the power a 2 ohm speaker gets vs a capped off 4 ohm I believe any difference will be offset.

There are amps that accept speaker level inputs. You don't necessarily need RCAs to run an amp. I'd definitely look into an aftermarket HU.

Also, forget what he says about a 2 ohm speaker running an amp hot. That isn't true if you get an amp that is 2 ohm stable. It is easy to find out....it will say so in the specs.

Here is the link to what I was suggesting.

Alpine KTP-445U Power Pack Compact upgrade for any car radio ? 45 watts RMS X 4 at Crutchfield.com

Run this amp with your Scion head unit (which it sounds like you already have and want to keep) along with some new 4 ohm speakers. If you were to try to run at 2ohms then your would need to bridge then and it isn't worth it IMO. 4x45W RMS is plenty of sound and will be very loud.

You can run Reference or Kappas. I probably wouldn't run Type Rs with only 45W RMS.

Basically you can run most quality speaker with this mini amp. Type Rs math require a bit more power.

There's only one good reason to spend extra money on an amp that's 2 ohm stable for mids and highs and that's if you're planning on competing in a stereo competition where you're in classes based on amplifier power.

Running at lower impedance means the amp is outputting higher currents, and it's to the detriment of sound quality at higher frequencies. It also means more heat, and heavier wiring, and it halves the damping factor. Damping factor is the ability of the amplifier to maintain control of the speaker cone, and it's the major difference between cheap amps and really expensive ones. When you go from 2 to 4 ohms you get double the power out of the amp (assuming it's truly capable of 2 ohms, and many aren't even though they claim to be) and that's exactly a 3 decibel increase. It's barely noticeable.

There's absolutely no point in using 2 ohm speakers up front in this application.

yes i want to keep it for while since i've only had it a few days. again though, how do i connect the amp to the HU? i'm old school where everything was rca's, so i don't know about this one, unless there is a harness that connects to the back to connect the amp?

unless there is a harness that connects to the back to connect the amp?

The amp I linked comes with a harness. You don't need RCA cables because you can direct connect the speaker wires using supplied harness and wiring diagrams. You will need to know the color codes for the speaker wires. I don't have it handy but they've been posted in several older threads.

If it were me I would run new speaker wire to the doors and switch to component speakers. Can a non-limited be easily converted to component speakers on our 4Runners? I don't know. My truck had factory component mounting and I just modified it to fit the Infinity speakers.
