This guy. Mine makes 130x4 and 575x1 as they are under rated amps.

If you are going to run a higher end amp with Type Rs then you should replace your head unit. The Scion unit isn't really up to par. It's probably quite disappointing actually. The signal to noise ratio is near awful.

Don't believe me, just look it up. In comparison It is really quite bad. It can sound good and with a medium amp and speakers I'm sure it would sound good to some but I don't see the point in running Type Rs with 130W RMS out of that low quality head unit. Think VHS audio quality vs. DVD with DTS and an optical connector. Much less noise!

You would be better off spending $200 more and buying a decent Alpine based unit with higher S/N (45 dB vs. 105 db omg what a difference, it's like a joke but it's reality) which also has built in HD radio, excellent blue tooth audio and proper amp hook ups.

When you do decide to run power for that amp, be sure to run 4GA and not 8GA. If you do run 8GA and notice the amp starts clipping, well it is because you didn't run 4GA.

One last thing, consider using spade adapters for connecting the power etc. Instead of crimps. They are much easier to swap out.

I think in a nutshell what most people are advising (myself included) is if you upgrade speakers and amplify, you need to ditch that scion deck as well. This was the cheapest complete system I ever did, and I'm VERY happy with it every single time I crank it up.

-Type R 6.5 components- $110 ebay
-Type R 5.25 components- $110 ebay
-Alpine PDX - v9 amp- $100 (score) craigslist
-Kenwood dual din deck- $130 ebay
-Type R 10" sub and nice ported box -$160 ebay

You have to consider you need an amp kit as well, I had lot's of 2 gauge wiring and just got a fuse holder for $10, I also wire using 9-wire harnesses to the deck for simplicity, +$30 @ cartoys/bestbuy.

Just under $700 for everything NEW in original box, except the amp. You can also cut those costs from my experience. A nice single din head unit can be had for $60-$80 on ebay. Just read, purchase from only highly rated electronic dealing vendors. The west coast (California) is LOADED with them. There is a few re-manufactured distributors mixed in, I personally never purchase those, just read the basic ad's and save.

Crutchfield is an excellent resource. If you catch their sale's on deck's, it's usually ok to buy through them. Example, $99 deck, free shipping, plus free dash kit, wiring harness, ect. On everything else, you can literally find speakers, amps and the like, for 40-60% of the cost on ebay.

Good luck. Used electronics are risky, due to theft and just the nature of burning shit up if you don't know what you're doing. If you buy ANYTHING used, make certain you're able to test it prior to leaving.

Well yes. But I did suggest he just buy the simple Infinity Reference speakers (which sound great), use the Alpine mini amp and keep the Scion deck. He could do all of that for < $300. But here we are .....

I learned a long time ago, if your gonna do something right, do it the first time :bigok: With stereo, I stop once my ear's hurt at half volume and it's balanced at volume and while quiet. Plenty of room to grow/deafen into that way.

Using the (2) Type R component sets can you recommend a good (+/- 6.5" display) headunit that has navigation, bluetooth, etc.
I have an amp for my rear subs, what amp should I use for my component speakers? PDX seems like a little overkill.

I'm probably not nearly as knowledgeable on an audiophile level as some of these other guys. I'm running strictly the PDX amp for my whole truck. As I said, I run the same PDX amp in 3 vehicles now, soon to be 4.

Far as head unit's go, I took some advice from my friend who works at Cartoy's. He isn't the standard sales representative. He's an installer and avid stereo guy. He has $5,000 front speakers in his Evo, so he dabbles with a variety of stuff outside their wall of speakers . He advised the exact system I purchased, my head unit doesn't have navigation though.

4v pre-outs, 3 sets, bluetooth, were about my only requirements. I like Kenwood stuff personally. I had heard the newer Alpine stuff wasn't as good as it use to be, never used a Pioneer deck, so again, my suggestion is limited. Read up on Crutchfield, google top consumer rated dual-din head units. Just learn to screen the reviews where it's obviously user error or they are lacking brain matter.

Since the difference is several hundred bucks for most deck's when you add navigation, I have ALWAYS preferred using my phone. Even when my car's had factory navigation, I used my phone. Maybe I'm just weird, but I want music playing, not some robot voice.

Both will sound fine. I doubt you'll hear a difference. One is shallow mount the other isnt. I had the shallow mounts in my 97 I sold. They sounded good. If they fit, get the regular. If not the shallow mounts will serve you just fine.

You won't be at exactly 2 ohms. Youll be somewhere between 2 and 4 most likely. Also, your amp will not be supplying that high of RMS constantly...of rarely depending on the volume you like to listen at.

As a blanket statement disagree that it is recommended to get an amp with more RMS than the speakers are rated for.

Here is what I would recommend:
* Assuming you go with the Alpine Mini Amp, which although I have never owned, has a really great reputation, and I would recommend.
* Pick decent speakers that are rated to be able to handle somewhere between 40-60W RMS. If the speakers are rated a bit higher that isn't a deal breaker but let's not get ridiculous.
* Buy an amp that has clean sound. The Alpine Mini should fit this requirement.
* Connect the amp in 4 channel mode 4x 4ohms speakers. Do not bridge the 4-channel amp to 2-channels at 2 ohms just because of the higher wattage. This really isn't necessary and again with the head unit you have you will just be adding more noise because class D load won't be as clean.
* These recommendations make no reference to any plans for a subwoofer.

The amp is 2 ohm stable. It will work fine with either of those speakers. The shallow mount will give up a negligible amount of sound quality to the regular depth mount. If the regular depths fit, go with them.

For what you're doing here you are kind of over thinking it.
Infinity, Alpines, Pioneer, JBL....all reputable companies that will have half way decent budget/entry level options for you. Some people will say this or that brand, but the reality is, they are all pretty comparable at this price point and you won't notice much of a difference.

Btw I don't know all the details of that amp but assuming you have 4 speakers and bridge the amp with 2x 4ohm speakers per side, making a 4ohm load on the amp per side using only 1 speaker per side, 2 speakers total.

Still assuming you will have 4 speakers (maybe I missed the comment where you are only running two speakers) ....

One reason why some people bridge 4 channel amps is to have the option to run two speakers (not 4) at a higher power output. So if you have two speakers you want to run a bit higher (maybe these speakers are subs or something) then bridging it is a great option to turn a 4x 4ohm setup into a 2x 4ohm or maybe even a 2ohm setup.

The other thing is that Alpine Mini Amp doesn't even support 90W x 2 at 2 ohm per side. It isn't 2 ohm stable while bridged. It is stable at 4x 2ohm but it only puts out 45W RMS. It can be brisged to be 2x4ohm at 90Ws per 2 channels.

Buy the two speakers for the front. Go ahead and get the amp. Wire the two new speakers and the 2 OEM rear speakers up to the amp. Connect the RCAs from head unit to the amp and you're good to go.
In your case the Head unit doesn't have RCAs but your amp accepts speaker level inputs. Don't worry about bridging and all that. You won't need it.

The amp and those speakers will work together just fine.

You dont have to understand it. All you need to do is buy a simple amp and 4 basic 4 ohm speakers and connect them simply as a drop in replacement.

No fancy bridging, no crazy wiring. Just simply get the amp and connect the wires. It is what I've been recomending for 2 days now lol. Keep it simple. It will sound good and you can use your Scion amp.

Call them. They will talk you through it at no charge. They offer free tech support. Well worth the free service cost of buying from them vs EBAY for any new stereo guru (to be).
