speaker options

I did run a search and found nothing on this

The speakers in the 87' are original and shot. I don't want to cut anything but I would like to get the best sound possible
What size/brand speakers would you guys recommend for the front and rear?

I got my front ones at wal mart. think they are 3x5 or something similar. the rears are simple 6x9s stuck in some plywood holders.

The rear speakers are generally a powered 5" speaker (for the SR5). The DLX I believe uses a non-powered 5" in the back.

Front speakers are a 4" in the dash.

Common upgrades are 5 1/4" speakers in the bottom front of the doors, and 6x9s in the back. If you have the SR5, you can mount the 6x9's over the storage cubby in the back seats.

I replaced the 4" fronts and bought some sturdy 6x9 boxes and a 12" sub box for the back, as it seems we don't have a lot of choices. If you can surf through a lot of the expensive stuff on Woofers Ect you can score some pretty sweet deals on some really nice speakers. Scored all of mine for well under 40% at the least.

I 2nd not buying extremely cheap speakers, it's not worth it. You don't have to spend a ton of money to have decent sound in one of these truck, and with how loud these trucks are, it's a waste to go too high end.

I'm mid level:

Sony CDX-F5700 (Had everything I wanted, Aux-In, MP3 CD and 7 band EQ)
JBL 5 1/4" woofers in the door
JBL 1" Aluminum tweeters in the factory speaker mounts
Polk 6x9s in the rear (plan to replace, they were there when I got it)
Jensen Bandpass 10" Sub w/Cheap 250watt amp

The bandpass sounds great in that location in the truck, and sounds amazing with the rear window down.

Future upgrades:
JBL 6x9's (The front and rear speakers in this truck sound completely different and are very hard to EQ)
4 Channel Amp for main speakers (the head unit does not drive them enough)

Thanks, I am thinking that I won't cut the interior but I will swap out the stock speakers

I don't think that cutting to fit 5 1/4" speakers up front will be too much damage for me. Thank you for the pics, very helpful.

It is nice to be part of a forum where people treat each other well. I was on a BMW forum not too long ago and the people that were on there were horrible to each other. I hope I can return the favor at some point for your help

When I am replacing the rear 6x9s on the 87'
Do I need to replace the boxes the speakers go in? Or will the stock ones work?

I put in infinity kappa 42.9i in the front location, and 63.9i in the rear with amp. For what it is, the sound is phenomenal. I also put 2 big boss 8" powered subs under the driver and passenger seats. You will need to raise the back of the seats 1" to do this.

You will need to make your own brackets for the rear speakers as it is impossible to use the old brackets. I used flat aluminum bar and ran cross braces to the factory sheet metal. You need to back space them a little to make sure they don't hit the factory panels.

If you REALLY need pics, I guess I could pull a rear panel off and take some pics.

Best thing is, for the most part, it's all stock looking with great sound.

It is a Mylar faced and backed high density foam that blocks heat and sound. It is very light weight and is used in big rigs to insolate the sleeper cabs. The stuff works about the same as Dynomat but is a fraction of the weight.

Is it also a fraction of the cost? I've always stayed away from the dynamat because it would cost hundreds to insulate... I'm more interested in cheaper mods until I can do some rebuilding of the body.

Maybe I'll just throw some fiberglass in there...

I got the stuff for free as scrap for the company fleet being outfitted with the stuff.
You can check with big rig dealerships to find out availability.

I did not want to cut opening in my doors either so I left the OEM 4" in stock locations and disconnected them. I built two boxes and screwed them to the front doors. Each box houses 2 5 1/4" mid-basses and a 3/4 tweeter. I have a 12" woofer in a box in the back. The only drawback is the the front seats can't move forward all the way because they hit the boxes after a few inches. Since the sound quality was most important to me the speakers were not cheap.
