vanion and IBall are making complete sense.

My limited experience with speakers is this: if you want really nice speakers, get an amp at the same time. An underpowered speaker that's really nice will sound worse than a well powered speaker that's not nearly as nice. For example: if you plan on getting really nice speakers ( I like Kappas), you gotta get an amp or they sound like crap. If you want to get an amp later, but still want good sound, get Infiniity Reference.

I know from personal experience that the Kappas sound like crap without an amp and the reference line sounds great either way.

For the price hands down best speakers. Go with the components up front. They also make a rear speaker in our size for this series. When they get a dedicated amp they sound amazing and you will think you have a 10" sub they put out so much bass.

I have 6501's up front, 521's in the back ran with new wire to a 200 watt amp and an Alpine deck. The sound quality is great but I'm actually not that thrilled with the bass. I've gone through all the settings but am I doing something wrong?

yup. gotta second this. tossed these polks into a tacoma (snoopy), a civic (zippy), and a prius (pearl). Next up is the posh snoop. these things are a great value and sound really good.

thanks a lot guys! you guys are great! The polk audio looks good for the price. I bought a new kenwood deck with bluetooth, I want something better than factory but, don't want to pay too much, and I have a polk sub woofer in my house and it is good! So currently I am leaning that way.

all great suggestions though, and will look at them as I go forward.

50 watts RMS x 4 and yes I have it running all 4 speakers.

Thats a pretty good setup. I loved the sound of them when I heard them hooked up. I thought they had a sub. They where not in a 4runner so that could have been it, smaller car. If you need more just add a sub!

My hope when I spent all the dollars on a new deck, amp, wire and speakers was that I wouldn't need a sub which would save me some space. I am still happy with the purchase because the systems sounds very clear, I was just hoping I wouldn't have to have a sub.

My hope when I spent all the dollars on a new deck, amp, wire and speakers was that I wouldn't need a sub which would save me some space. I am still happy with the purchase because the systems sounds very clear, I was just hoping I wouldn't have to have a sub.

I have some crappy kenwood doors right now and they sound pretty good. People think I have a little sub hidden somewhere. Im very surprised you need more. But again I have had some other nice door speakers in cars that just didnt put out the bass like I expected either. Almost like stock speakers where better for bass. But those polk always have best reviews and when I heard them was amazed.

I second this! the db6501 is an awesome speaker especially with an amp.

And just to add my own $.02, just skip the rear speakers entirely. Spend the extra money on a better set of component speakers up front and/or and external amplifier. The fronts-only overall setup has a better soundstage and is easier to tune.

I fit some 6.5" JBL components into my front doors with just a bit of trimming on the backside of the doorcards for clearance along with a 3/4" speaker ring. I ran this setup with a 4x150 wpc amp (running active setup with a Pioneer deck) with no sub for awhile and quite liked it. I eventually added a sub as well for a little more bottom end oomph, but a good set of 6.5's with some power thump way better than most people give them credit for. This all fit behind the stock doorcards and looked totally stock other than the headunit.

For the people that swapped out the audio speakers, was there a specific brand that you used that you feel is amazing?

If you want great for the money go with Pioneer.

Amazing just depends on what you are trying to accomplish.. To me there is no specific brand. you can add a head unit, speakers and amp and it might sound a little better but it's all in the tuning and door treatment.

JL is a great product but not for that price tag.
