Special tools needed for the TB/WP/etc change?

I have done searching online and I have read through How-tos but I still have the question... What special tools are needed for the whole TB/WP/everything change? (timing belt tensioner compressor, pulley holder tool, etc?)

If you are installing a NEW tensioner, there is no use for the tensioner compressor tool. Otherwise, if you are NOT changing it, you can live without the tool, but you have to go through the PIA of removing the old one, compressing it in a vise, and reinstalling.

You do need a way to hold the pulley when torquing the crankbolt to 218 ft-lbs. and you need a torque wrench that will go that high.

Thanks Durk. You cleared up some of my confusion with the tensioner compressor tool and when it is needed.

Deep 6 point socket. breaker bar. torque wrench (50-250lb from auto zone free tool rental). Be careful with loaner torque wrenches as they may be out of calibration. Special service tool (SST) from toyota, or make your own. Goog 'home made toyota special service tool 4runner remove crankshaft pulley' or just buy one. I made this:

hey shooter, some threads will recommend you unbolt you ac compressor to remove tensioner. on my 98 3.4 4x4 a 1/2 in rachet and extension with a swivel/wobblejoint/u-joint, from straight underneath the tensioner worked great. also this was my thrid timing belt job and it was not as easy as i thought it would be. not hard just not easy

I'm actually going to do this job this weekend and had the same questions. Is this photo of said part that needs to be compressed with vice?? Wouldn't impact gun eliminate the need of crankshaft special tool?

This is a cheaper way of "making" a crank pulley tool. $7 roughly and no need to drill or cut anything.

`1. Yes. This one is new and comes pre-compressed. That's what the wire thingy does is keep it compressed.

2. How do you use an impact gun when you want to put it ON? Just hit it hard and call it good? Recipe for disaster....Needs to be torqued to exactly 218 ft. lbs.

Lol good point wasn't really thinking about the install just how tough it will be to break that crankshaft bolt loose.

SST, or some home made variation, + breaker bar = not really that hard to unbolt. Some people use the 'bump start' method which does not require the SST. Place the 6 point socket and breaker bar on the bolt, secure the breaker bar against the frame or ground or some such solid thing, quickly turn and release the key. Make sure the spark plug wires or something else (EFI relay?) are disconnected to prevent the engine from actually starting. Make sure you figure out which way the crank rotates so you know on which side to have the breaker bar. You really just need the SST to reinstall and correctly torque the bolt accurately. Goog variations of 'bump start' 'timing belt' 'crank bolt' '4runner'.
