Speed Bumps...

... my 4Runner doesn't seem to handle them very well. I have to slow WAYYY dow nand almost crawl over them otherwise my T4R will top out with a bang and it almost bottoms out too. Does anyone else experience this?

My shocks seem fine, I have X-reas and have not seen any leaks, plus it levels out quick with no extra bouncing after the bump (I've even tried standing on the bumper and jumping off and it just seems to bounce once and stop - so seems fine).

If it does this on speed bumps it makes me wonder what it would be like off-roading with the OEM equipment - must top out alot and bang around.

I have no problem with going over the speed bumps. I slow down to 15-20 mph, but not to a crawl...

I don't have the XREAS though, but I don't think that what you describe is normal.

Xreas makes the ride over speed bumps or anything you hit head on ridiculously harsh. Take them at an angle if you can.

I just plow over everything. We have speed humps in our town - Ive gotten air once or twice.

In my opinion, these 4th gen runners are under-sprung. I'm sure toyota was going for a soft, cushy, soccer mom kind of ride. My '08 SR5 used to feel similar to what your describing, minus any pops or banging, but definetly bottoming out on the bumpstops when driving over just about everything. Granted, I never had X-REAS either. I ended up installing some FJC springs and Bilstein 5100 shocks. It made a huge difference.

Well... I'm probably slowing down to around that, or maybe slightly under to avoid the harsh top-out - but go even a bit faster and it makes a huge difference. I've gotten so I know what speed (by feel) to go to avoid teh real thump.

Just thougt it seemed harsh for a 4Runner that is so apt at off-roading.

What kind of speed bumps are you talking about? I don't know if you have any different ones from what I encounter but I see two kinds. The first are the old style tarmac ones where I can take them at speed and the truck makes no noise and it doesn't even have a change in pitch. The second are these newer ones where their black and blocky. Those I do slow down otherwise it does feel abit rough. This seems pretty normal for any car or truck I have driven over these bumps.

yeah they are a bit undersprung, but nothing like the 3rd gens. i thought my rear bumper was hitting the ground in my 3g.

I had XREAS and noticed that I was hitting the bump stops over speed bumps. I got a toyotec 3 inch lift. When I put on the lift, I saw 3 of the 4 shocks/ struts were leaking. The truck had 68,000 miles.

Just a suggestion:

Check for a broken or loose shock. You may just have a small problem with an easy fix.

This experience does NOT sound normal to me.
