afaik there is no speed limit for 4hi. speeds under 50mph or 80kmh are required to shift into it.
however, if situation dictates you need to shift into 4hi, wouldnt it be safe to keep the vehicle at a lower speed?
just because you have 4hi doesnt make you invincible like some of the soccer moms around here with suburbans think![]()
Stability on slippery or wet roads, it could help you to make sharp turn to avoid soccer moms ; )

What about driving on a straight, dry road, while meeting the requirement for 10 miles per month in 4WD? Nothing there to dictate a lower speed.
4HI is like 2HI only the diff is locked and all 4 wheels are turning, instead of just the back.
I wouldn't do 70, but I think 50-ish would be safe under certain conditions. Just remember your fronts are locked...
If you want to do 70+ on say snow or sand or whatever, then get an AWD.
All front diffs delivered on the 5th gen are open differentials.
Only the TE comes with a locking rear differential, and that can only be engaged in 4WD-LOW without wiring modifications.
On part-time 4WD vehicles, there is no center differential. A clutch is engaged that locks the front and rear drive shaft outputs together, nothing more.
i think feral's choice of wording was a bit confusing but i got the point.
i think what he was saying by diff locked is that the front wheels will be engaged by the shifting of the transfer case from 2hi to 4hi making all 4 wheels spin.
the actual diff being locked like we would see with an air locker or e-locker isn't what he was saying. i think he just meant that the front wheels would be engaged.
Exactly. I typed it too quick... I really do know what I'm talking about...Really...But thanks homeyclaus for the "schooling".
Which is why i jumped on it, rather than let that become the perceived "truth."
Attention to detail, my friend, attention to detail.
You mean everything I read here is not true?!!!
At best, the internet is akin to the game of telephone we all played in Kindergarten.
Coulda fooled me....I thought we all drove thin skinned, cheap plastic, tinny sounding, no insulation, no power, no fancy taillight, oxidized headlighted, terrible tire'd, crappy antenna'd POS vehicles that got poor gas milage to boot! At least that's what I read from some of these posters. You know what my two items I wish I had after 22K miles in 10 months? An adjustable dash light and a lighted homelink button. Thats all. Everything else is fine and Toyota has made a good, sound vehicle with the 5G 4Runner. I am going to write a review in February on a year with the 4Runner.

I gotta tell ya, I'm getting really close to lighting that Homelink button. For some reason, even though I know it's there, I can't find it at night without turning the maplight on.
I was looking into a dashlight override mod too, that keeps the lights bright with the headlights on. It may not be super easy. Toyota, it appears, has overengineered the dashlights too. Guages, the radio, and the HVAC appear to be different circuits, but still interlinked. I dunno for sure. I really have been fighting myself- do I want to take the dash out for the 4th time to access those wires?? Maybe after Xmas...
