Speedometer cable wire replacement?

Finally had it with the speedo cable and took the friggin thing out. We've all read 911's story on the factory replacement so I thought I would try the cheap fix for now and just replace the wire out of the cable housing. $8 at the parts store so either way, no big deal.

Question is the replacement wire has a square grommet that is added to the tranny end. The toyota has a longer grommet with a small side piece that goes in the tranny. Can you reuse the toyota piece or buy it from toyota or another place? Everything else seems trivial in the replacement, but that piece got me.

You might take a pic of it, and post it in the thread. I think I know the part your talking about. I looked into changing it over to use a "standard" cable. Adapting the end at the trans and cluster head seemed , for me, like too much aggravation. If I had a pick and pull that was close, I might have tried that route.
If you want to run an inexpensive route, why not pick a 1992 or later truck someone is parting out? Parts prices are close to a give-away and there are loads of them on CL with blown motors (ie cable and speedo head are probably fine). Best of luck with it.

Well, after some sleuthing on the interwebs, it looks like our Toyotas use what they call a .187 tang. Its crimped on so reusing is going to be hard. Most of the new kits come with a standard GM tip. So now I'll just need to find where I can buy one of these guys at. Good news atleast is there's a shop that builds replacement cables about an hour and half from here. If all else fails, I'll go to him.
