Splicing wires to swap door from 99 to 97

So my aunt messed my door up on my 1997 SR5. I went to the salvage yard and grabbed a new door from a 1999 limited Not thinking about the wiring harness. So my question is, is it possible to splice the wires and change the wiring harness? Or should I just wait for a 1997 to pop up.

You probably can splice it but your going to need both electrical wiring diagrams to match things up and verify circuits..

Cant you just swap wiring harness between the two doors? Or is that a major PITA?

If that is the case. you can swap the door harness and guts of each shell if need be. I never studied the differences between the connectors nor the wiring. 1999 is the first year of the Communication bus. I do know they swap connectors on purpose when changed are made so people don't plug in incompatible wiring.

I actually did this just in reverse. I put a door from a 98 on my 2000. I was able to swap the harness and re-pin the window regulator connector. For me I lost the auto function of the window on my 2000. You may be in more luck putting the newer door on the older truck.

Swapping the harness is not very difficult and you can keep the lock and window actuator in the door.

I messed around with something similar when I wanted to add heated mirrors from a '99 to my '97. I bought the mirror at the junkyard, and the full door harness thinking I can just replace the '97 harness with the '99, and have the connector for the mirror heater.

No such luck - the two harnesses are completely different, as are the connectors that mate to the vehicle under the dash. You'll spend a lot of time trying to re-splice the '99 to work in the '97 vehicle.

Your best bet is probably to swap the entire harness from the old '97 door into the new '99 door. It may be a decent amount of work, so you may be better off trying to find a '97 door instead.

I only had to run one additional wire for the mirror heater, so I ran it in parallel to the main harness:

As others have said, you'll need to swap harnesses. The window, mirror and lock control is all different between the 96-98 and 99-01 4Runners. Not sure if the window motors will plug-n-play either (auto up/down was added in '99 for both front windows). Mechanically, they should be compatible, at least...

Swapping all of the guts out isn't too hard. But a limited door should have the plastic cladding on the sides which your SR5 does not so it wouldn't match anyways.

Thanks for all the tips. I’m glad I didn’t start splicing. I got the idea from an old thread. But my wires didn’t match up to what was said in that post. I was able to swap the wiring harness. Not sure why I thought splicing would be easier

Maybe it wasn’t a limited. It had leather so I just assumed it was a limited. The door matches up good! Just a little clear coat peeling but I can live with it
