Spray paint fail

I was attempting to paint my grille black to match and now my grille just looks like crap.

i started out sanding it really well, sandable primer, black krylon paint and up until this point all was good. then i put the clear coat on and it reacted with the paint in certain areas to give me a crappy looking cracking/waffle pattern in some places. so i sanded the clear coat down and through some of the black paint. i re-primed it this morning and in certain areas it looked like it was not fully sticking. i sanded the primer a bit and put paint on and not it looks bumpy in the same areas it did with the first attempt.

the only thing i can think is that there must be too much paint? should i sand back down to the chrome?
anything helps!

if you are painting on plastic, which the t4r grilles are, you spraypaint for plastics. or else it will crack almost like the paint shrinks

Did the directions on the Krylon call for a sandable primer and clearcoat?

I think the Krylon is just sand, wash, paint and dry. No primer or topcoat needed. I might be wrong but I thought it was specifically made to do right on plastic.

mine is starting to peel off there is chrome showing now. stupid salt, and rocks. haha im gonna either

a: repaint

b: do that s..... mod i forget the name

c: get new grill that is black from factory

or c and b if im feeling crafty

Tineman06, I have a possible solution for you. Instead of painting it, try using black vinyl tape instead.... the kind that's made for racing stripes and decals.

I used it to black out the grill on my old 98 base model I had back in the day and it came out looking better than it would have if I painted it. I don't own the 4runner anymore, but I still see it on the road every now and then, and it still looks like it did the day I applied the tape on about 7 years ago.

hahahahaha my grille is still sitting in my basement cause I did the same thing. Im even painting it black lol. What you did is you used acrylic clear coat which destroys enamel paint. Just sand the ever livin sh*t out of it and make sure you go get enamel clear coat. and use duplicolor paint and clear coat. You can also ask your local bodyshop if they can brew up some spray paint cause their stuff is really good and they can match toyota black a lot better.

Like Matt said the clearcoat mixed with the paint. The Krylon is meant to stick directly to plastic. So the primer actually is not the best surface for the paint to adhere too. I suggested the Krylon because it is easy to use and you can touch it up easily becuase it has no topcoat. The Krylon is meant to have "softness" to it which will help it from chipping.

The duplicolor works well too, lots of people have used that. You will use a clearcoat with that.

What ever you do just make sure you do exactly what the label says. They usually know what they are talking about.

as everyone else said its the mixing of the paints that causes the problem, as for getting the paint back off use some aircraft paint stripper on it. Just spray it on then scrub the paint off w/ a brush and some water. Don't leave it on for too long, but i've done this to other grills before w/ good results.
