Spring on tailgate regulator

hi all i have a 92 t4r 3.0, i am fixing up my tailgate putting in a new regulator and channels but my spring on my regulator let go so i have to retighten it. how do i know how tight to wind the spring up? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know I'll probably have to this, but have no idea how. In my neck of the woods, I've heard there are shops in the poorer sections of town that can re-tension the springs fairly cheaply. If you find out anything else, please post.

well i have spun the one arm a few times and wound it up.....does anyone have a pic of the regulator showing the spring and the tension on it?

also how do you get the arms to line up correctly just have the teeth mesh from the start so the arms will be horizontal at the same time?

From what I remember the spring is not adjustable... I may be wrong on that.

For the gears, you have to line them up when you put them together. It'll take a few tries to get it right, but you'll know when it is.

at what point to i put on the window motor to the regulator? do i line up the mesh gears then put on the window motor or what are the steps......i have some tension on the one arm with the spring just don't know if it is enough.....

I meshed the gears first, then attached the motor.

i meshed the gears and moved the arms to the up position so i could gain access to the screws to put on the motor.....now what is the best way to attach the glass to the arms?

Raise the arms so that they are straight across (halfway), and slide the rollers into the channel from one side. You will need to have the regulator unbolted from the tailgate to do this, as you will have to move the regulator side to side.

There are two styles of window channels, one has a solid channel all the way across the bottom of the window, the other has two separate channels.

If you have two separate channels, align the rollers on one side of each channel and slide it in.

If you have a solid channel, insert one roller on one side, then slide the entire regulator assembly to the other side so you can slide the other roller in.

...I hope that makes sense... I've done it on both types, so I know it's possible. The trick is to move the regulator, not the window.

This whole process is a little sticky because the window blocks access to the regulator, and the regulator blocks access to the window. You will need to have the regulator attached and the safety switch bypassed so you can move the regulator up and down as you work.

Once the window is attached, then you bolt in the regulator.

how do i move the arms horizontal once the motor is attached? mine are in the up position......and my channels are 2 separate so put on on first then the other i take it....i had the arms horizontal before i put on the motor but couldn't screw in all the screws to put on the motor.......
