Spring "overland" trip George Washington National Forest

Thank you all for all the positive feedback. If no emergency things come up that weekend. I am going be there for the trip. I am going to remove the running board and the mud guards, less things to worry.

Both very easy to remove and re-install :thumb:

Tough to say on weather that time of year. FWIW, I'm bringing my hammock and fly.

If it rains, I'll be sleeping in the truck.

i'd be very interested in seeing and learning about ya'lls hammock set ups. I've got several tents that I use but have always been curious about sleeping hammock style.

Depending on where I am/the kind of trip I'm on, I rotate between sleeping up top on the Gobi, inside in the tub (rarely), or in an Eno double nest under a Hennessy hex fly (if lightly raining/low wind).

The Eno has been a game changer (read-as back saver) on multi-day trips.

My cousin is always raving about hammocking and always posting cool pics of him hiking/hammocking. He swears he'll never go back to tents. So I thought I'd give a shot and started the process of building my own kit. So far I just have a Eno Sub7 hammock and suspension straps. Will be looking at underquilts and rain flys soon.

Does anyone take off their sway bars or do you run the trails with them on?

I don't and I have the non-KDSS suspension. Of the times I have been out on trails that would require some flexiness, the sway-bar has not been a noticeable issue...for me at least.

Even, if disconnecting, the limits of the CV's and control-arm ball joints wouldn't give that much more flex anyway for the hassle of removing them. Now if you have a long-travel suspension that's a different story.

It presents a few problems in my mind. It could be simple to disconnect the sway bar links from the front steering knuckle/spindle but then the question becomes where to hang them so they are not in the way of the tires or poke into the CV boot or steering.

I have no place to legally wheel where I don't have a long, highway drive and would not ever consider driving without sway bars connected for that long. That eliminates the option of completely removing them for my case.

In short I would say it is not necessary to disconnect or remove the sway bars for this trip at least.

Your mud guards are fine, they will hit things but they are flexible and just fold out of the way

We're officially in (said yes on FB). Hopefully going to do both nights. At the minimum we'll be there Friday and Saturday during the day. I think I'm bringing the 4th gen, gotta get her prepped!

Don't speak so fast- I had to cut my stock mud flaps off at Rousch Creek when they got bent and then rolled up the into the wheel well. propain was a witness.

My wife was working all day so I took the kids on a day trip up to GRSF today. Figured I'd post up a few pics to keep everybody's stoke up.

carlos.elmotor, did you hard wire the radio base to your car or did you set it up with a 12v AC plug car adapter? I plan to get the same radio just not sure how to power it.

Hey 08runnertjb,

I initially hardwired it to my starting battery. When I can find the time, I'll be rewiring it to my secondary fuseblock/house battery.

To power it through your internal OEM fuseblock (driver's side floorboard) you'll need a mini add-a-fuse, a couple of appropriately-sized fuses, and a multimeter would help.

Use your multimeter to find a hot connection in the fuseblock that fits your need (i.e., always on, on w/ key in the ACC position, or on when truck is running, etc.). Alternatively just pick a fuse slot that's on w/ ACC (like your stereo) and use your add-a-fuse there. If you use a slot that's already fused, make sure to use a fuse that matches the OEM Amp rating in the lower add-a-fuse slot to keep the factory equipment properly protected.

Whichever spot in your fuseblock you choose, remember that you have to fuse the lower circuit (the one without the wire) in order to power the upper circuit (where the red power line for the CB will connect). Connect the red power wire from the CB to the add-a-fuse crimp connector, insert the add-a-fuse into the fuse block, ground the black wire from the CB box, connect the CB unit to the box, and turn it on to make sure it powers up.

Remember that keying the mic (transmitting) without an antenna hooked up could potentially damage your radio, so always make sure that the antenna is connected when pushing the transmit key. (source). I bought a cheapo SWR/RF meter to tune my antenna's SWR. Turned out to be worth the $20 because my tunable Firestik had a really high SWR out of the box -- took all of 3 minutes to get it down to something like 1.2/1.3.

Hope that makes sense and feel free to PM me or give me a call if you want to discuss. I'm on TDY for the next couple of weeks, but will check in.

carlos.elmotor, thanks for the detailed explanation! Didn't want to derail the thread but really didn't find anything in the forums here about radio/comms installs. I'll PM you if I have any further Qs or issues.

Thanks!

Sleeter my sister in-law just joined the FB event. She'll be with her BF in jeep. I may have one other friend who has a taco that might be interested.
