Sputtering Accelerator Pedal

Sputtering and pumping feeling

Hi guys, I followed the trend and I've had the same problem start today.
I have a 1998 SR5 V6 manual, my father was the first owner and I am the second, so I know all the problems and maintenance it's had, and this is the first time this has happened.
I went on vacation for 11 days and the truck wasn't moved for that time; I live in Halifax, Canada (not extremely cold weather, but between 0 and -10 C).

When I accelerate past about 30 Km/h, the truck starts resisting, sort of a sputtering/pumping feeling. It feels like the engine is struggling but the MPH are normal, and at the same time it feels like the car might stall.

No engine lights are on, no smoke or weird noises. It just feels like something is wrong so I haven't tried to push forward.

Any suggestions? I'm also wondering if I can even drive it at all? I'm nervous to push it and have something go very wrong.

Did you find a solution? Im having a similar issue. 2000 4runner 3.4 motor. Replaced air box,(potential stripped screw on the MAS) replaced MAS, Replaced TPS, replaced IAC, Replaced ECT, Replaced brake booster ( as per Dealer diagnosis) , checked vacuum lines for breaks. New plugs. No codes. Been to 4 shops, all the incorrect diagnosis. The problem is exactly the same and has not presented itself differently after each repair.
Runs fine on start up. As it approaches normal operating Temp, it will seem to lose power. If you come to a stop and accelerate it bogs down, back fires through the air box. Does the same thing if restarted after 30 minutes. When the issue occurs , if you pull over and restart the vehicle it will return to normal operation

Backfiring out the intake is a lean condition. It does suck that there is no easy way to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

Do you have a scanner that reads live data?

Same problem

So last Friday, I was driving around and then all of a sudden my car started to sputter as if it wasn't getting enough power. I checked the battery cables and made sure that they were tightened and when I started the car the sputtering went away. As I was heading home it started again and left me scratching my head. On Saturday, I replaced the spark plug wires, coils, upstream and downstream O2 sensors and fuel filter. I probably 2 months ago replaced the spark plugs so I feel that there is no need. The engine just feels as if a wire is disconnected and just running like crap but I triple checked everything. Today I am going to check over everything again to see if I have missed anything. It is a 99 limited edition with roughly 200k, came with a cold air intake on it (which I could be sucking too much air in) but that never gave me an issue before. Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

It could be your fuel pump

I had similar issues in my '96 Tacoma 4x4 V6. One of the spark plugs was cracked and shorting out on the spark plug tube. I experienced the sluggish, misfire/hesitation going up any sort of grade. Timing marks all lined up so I was perplexed at the cause.

my little brother came up to visit, we pulled off the timing cover, he looked at the cam gear and saw that the little pin the locates the position of the gear and asked, "Is that supposed to be like that?"

Turned out that the pin sheared off, causing the cam to be off a couple of gears which explained why the driver-side bank was all getting misfires but not showing any loss of compression.

I seem to be having this issue after a radiator replace. Sputter on acceleration, feels like a vacuum issue but I can't find one. Anyone here find anything out? My issues sounds most like darkyoda, but I am assuming that we're not going to hear from him after 4 years.
Thanks,
Colin

From my TW build thread( wife’s 3rd gen 4runner)

Been chasing bogged down acceleration on the 4runner. Typical scenario:

come to stop at a stop sign, skinny pedal then 2000-2500 RPM then stumble, with no acceleration Traveling at constant velocity approx 15-20mph, push little harder on the gas pedal and nothing But a slight increase in RPM but get a backfire. Eventually it just goes away. No real pattern other than it occurs from the stopped position to acceleration.

Happens periodically.

So far cleaned the throttle body changed all the associated gaskets and checked the tps mechanism. Cleaned MAF. Adjusted accelerator cable. No crazy corrosion around the o2 sensors and wires looks new.

With no CEL it could be a few things plan was to do plugs, wires and coils. Parts were on order.

But today my wife almost got stranded after the 4runner couldn’t accelerate and shut down, still not F’in code. A simple, turning the 4runner off and turn back on got her to a friends house(the desitation). I got the call and said **** it. Canceled the online order, Got my tools together, Rosie puppy and picked up NGK plugs, wires, coils packs.

After I got to the 4runner, drove it around for 30mins had my scanner in hand, it bogged down! Waiting.... waiting.... still no F’in code after 10 minutes, no code and then magically I can hear the proper idle ahah.

Pissed I park the runner near the truck and get to work.

The spark plugs have seen better days.

With the maintenance done, the test drive was great! But question is does it solve the problem??

Nope, about an hour later took the 4runner for another test drive and it bogged down. But Finally got P0172 and

P1130 TOYOTA - Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1.

I’ve already checked for vacuum leaks, clean MAF and all general intake issues. So huh must be the upstream o2. Another trip to the auto store and new o2 senser with a hefty price tag.

Before removal, I spray the two nuts and wait. It’s a little cramped but I was able to get an extended socket on it and whhhhhatt, the nuts were on hand tight ahahha. Old sensor had some build up and slight corrosion on the gasket. With new sensor in a a few test drives under our belt, things look great and we’re ready for the 45 min drive home. So far so good, the 4runner got some needed maintenance and is overall running better.
