Squeaking when turning the steering wheel

Hey folks,

I tried the search function but nothing came up. Hopefully I can get some help :shrug:

I currently started noticing a squeak; more like a squeal when I turn the wheel either left or right. I started hearing it when I park in reverse and have to turn the wheel to make it fit. Its from a certain point to a certain point and not all the time. I was wondering what you guys think it can be. There is no slop in the steering or any other symptoms. I was wondering if there is something I can grease down there as it sounds like it might just need some greasing. A pinpoint to where I can grease would be great. If not what could it be? :shrug:

here is a knuckle down below your feet, take some WD-40 and stay that. Make sure you have mats or some cardboard/ plastic to catch what drips off, after the drips stop take to for a ride with all the windows down, to get the smell out. Good luck, I'll post pics tomorrow. Same thing on my 03 Highlander before I traded it for my 03 4R V8, just got a little dry so that fixed the problem. arty:

is it coming from the steering wheel assembly or the steering pump?

i had a super annoying squeek (like a mouse on a wheel) coming from my steering wheel. it started up out of the blue and was pretty annoying.

i solved it by spraying silicone into the moving parts around the steering wheel / column. here is the catch though, it didn't go away for about 2 months. the best I can figure is that since the assembly is pretty tight, it is difficult to get the silicone to seep inside right away.


good luck & use silicone not WD-40 (more dust friendly)

How loud is it? Does it changed if you give it some gas? I'm thinking it's your power steering belt.

Its sounds like its coming from the steering assembly. Its coming from the outside and its pretty loud like a brake squeak/squeal when I turn the wheel at 3/4 to the left and 3/4 to the right. I will try to make a vid when I get home so you guys can hear it.

I dont think its the belt, but who knows.

That is what would need to be greased in a 4R.

And this.

Also look at the steering shaft that connects to the shaft inside, follow it to the power steering rack. Spray WD-40 or silicone spray, I would do Silicone spray because it doesn't attract dust. I know I said WD-40, but really anything to lube it will work.

Guys i have this problem too?!!!!..when i turn the steering all the way to the left..and all the way to the right. Also noticed that the body "moves or leans" while turning the steering wheel. Is this a steering rack bushing issue?? or PS Belt? or some lube in the steering column?..

The truck moving when turning the wheel is normal. Look at my other post, if that doesn't fix it, look into other things.

20034runner v8: i tried your other post..lubed under the steering, it did not work. I know for a fact that my rack & pinion is leaking and also possible that its bushing is also shut!!!.. i will try to relpace the R&P, is there a DIY for it?..

I'm having the same issue. I noticed if I Pushed the tire left or right the sound spears to be coming from somewhere near the break dust shield. The squeal pretty loud and almost hollow sounding. It doesn't make the noise all the time, mostly when I'm driving slowly, or turning from a stop.

Did anyone figure this out? Im having the same issue. On the driver side it makes a metal on metal sound, like a brake squeak when I turn. Its real annoying, its not the tie rod end, ball joint that I can tell. It sounds like its coming from around the brake, cv shaft. Did the OP or anyone have this issue before?

Bad lower ball joints, the boots where ripped and they where dry. Fix them ASAP with only Toyota OEM ball joints. I installed lift and lower joint failed a few months later causing tire to fall off truck. Don't get caught in my situation, I had to replace a lot more than ball joints for waiting it out.
