I can't speak for anything other than my 2012 Limited, but although mine is not illuminated, there is a subtle white LED that illuminates it from the overhead light area

And the three overhead Homelink buttons! :Cry: Ant or 1E modded their overhead console with some tiny LED's - but I don't know why Toyota didn't just make those illuminated too (already has an illumination circuit ran there for the other illuminated overhead switches).

I agree it's a little odd....cause most vehicles that have a dial usually light up. I can understand the trail becuase most shift levers do not...but at least on my 2015 the overhead blueish light that shines down lights the area up a little.
Am I the only one that prefers a dark interior when driving at night? I find too many lights on the inside to be a bit distracting.
I actually miss my old G8 - it had an combo switch to the side of the steering wheel that allowed you to turn off the gauge lighting (everything except the speedo, I believe) as well as the head unit display. Made it so much more comfortable on longer highway drives at night.

This one drives me nuts, just on principle. I assume that some of the buttons are unlit simply to save a couple pennies here and there, but what I cannot understand is how they chose which ones not to light.
The stupid party mode button is lit, yet the homelink buttons aren't?
Did someone at Toyota really think that nobody pulls into their garage at night?

I have a 2012 Limited and they're not on mine.
FWIW, they do have braille-style bumps on them, so it's reasonably easy to find them in complete darkness, as long as you're roughly in the right area. Still, they should be lit.

Mine are lit too. I've got a 2014 Trail Premium. I think they may have lit them starting with the 2014 refresh.
Now if only my sunroof buttons were lit...
I agree, they are pretty easy to find...I just find the lit vs. unit buttons to be completely random.
Case in point ^
Traction control off, downhill assist....light those. Sunroof and homelink controls in the same panel (And far more likely to be used at night)....don't light those.

2014 and up they are lit. Reason I traded my 2012 for a 2015 lol. Not really. Really. Not really.

Every time I'm fumbling for the correct homelink button in the Trail I'm reminded how luxurious the Trail Premium is...:biggrin2:
One thing worth mentioning is that by and large the switches that aren't lit are tactile in nature. All the smooth rectangular switches are lit while other than the 120V inverter switch (into which it would seem Toyota couldn't cram a third LED) you should be able to figure out what all the unlit switches are by touching them without looking. The sunroof switches, mirror switch, 4WD knob, garage door openers and so on are all unique shapes and sizes so that you can tell what they are in the dark or even during the day without having to look at them (the bumps on the garage door opener buttons are arguably not very distinctive which may be why Toyota lit them in 2014+ models).
