SR5 vs. Sport Edition

I am currently looking into buying either an '05 SR5 or Sport Edition but I'm having a hard time making up my mind. Toyota seems to be offering the best discounts on the SR5's due to supply and demand. The going price for an SR5 with a few options is around $24K including the $1K rebate. I'm not sure how low they'd be willing to discount an SE because they are a lot harder to find. Plus, I'm having the hardest time finding a Sport Edition without a sunroof (I'm 6'4"). I like all of the extra standard options you get with the Sport Edition, plus I don't like the chrome grill on the SR5 at all. I guess I'm just trying to justify spending the extra money on the Sport Edition vs. the SR5. What made you purchase what you did? I noticed we have quite a few SE owners on here, but it seems that at this time they are nearly impossible to find. Thanks for any advice you might have. :)

I bought the SE for the hood scoop.

Just kidding but I do like the scoop. But it was mainly the xreas and the addedlittle extras that made it seem like the best value for waht you get.

On paper, the biggest differences are the XREAS, telescoping steering, and the hood scoop (brakes are the same for SR5's with 17" wheels and SE's), and heated outside mirrors. If you can live without these goodies, an SR5 is a great choice, especially considering the price point and they are easier to find without the sunroof. My MSRP for my '04 was about 31500, I got the vehicle for 27k minus rebate ($26k out the door) including taxes.

I bought the SE because of the XREAS and (yes I'm vain) the hood scoop. It also comes with its own rim design, shift knob and different interior cloth.

Little did I realize that it also came with slightly bigger front brakes.

If you want to do an agressive lift, then go with the SR5 since the XREAS doesn't leave you much choices.

I'm with sharp4runr and the Sport has bigger wheels. I really wanted the heated mirrors. But I guess in GA it doesn't matter.

I brought the SE for the different rim, xreas, silver roof rack, and color matching grill. Oh, and definitely the sight blocker (hood scoop). I just enjoy looking at that bulky thing on the hood each time I drive. You should be able to find a SE without the sunroof since they are shipping the April production soon. Whatever you get, you're sure will enjoy her. Good luck on your purchase.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I was able to find 3 SE's without a sunroof that are supposed to be available on the 18th of this month. I called the dealership and was told I could put $1K down as a deposit to hold a particular one which is one option. But right now its all about timing, I'm not sure when Volvo is going to mail the payoff check to me and when this buy-back process will be over so I don't want to buy anything until everything is finalized, and at the same time I don't want to give the car back and then have nothing to drive.

SR5 vs Sport

I chose to get the SR5 because I want to eventually install a coiliver lift and I did not like the JBL stereo. Also, I did not like the gray bumper trim and wanted the backup mirrors. But awhile ago, my 1st choice was a V8 sport. I have no regrets!!
Either choice you win. Good luck.

Gotta go with the sport, but make sure you get a sunroof so that you can stick your head out to see past the massive, view blocking, enourmous scoop. (read dripping with sarcasm)

:D

I'm with sharp4runr and the Sport has bigger wheels.

The Sport has larger standard wheels than the SR5 (16-inchers), but the optional 17-inchers are the same size.

I went with the Sport because I wanted the XREAS suspension, color-matched mirrors, and, yes, the hood scoop.

I was also wanted side airbags and the JBL changer, both of which seem to be more prevalent on Sport Editions and Limiteds in my area.

I did not want the sunroof. Fortunately, my region orders them this way.

The Wheels!! They are better looking IMHO. I think the 17" sr5 and limited wheels look a little "flat". The sport wheels appear to be deeper dish. I like the scoop as wel...

4 all the same reasons

and now that i own the se i really like the way the hood scoop, se wheels and interior look. The xreas is awesome, it is fun to drive with the xreas which i didn't expect in a heavy truck.

I went with the SR5 mainly because of cost. I did get some upgrades but couldn't seem to equipt an SE similarly without getting a lot of extra features that I didn't want.

To me, I like the 17" SR5/Limited rims better, didn't like the white raised letter tires, prefer leather shifter to metal (gets hot here!), don't need the heated mirrors. Got a 2x so I didn't think XREAS would be that big a deal. Guess it depends on what you like!

I remember reading that the SE is only about $900 more than an SR5 if you can get them optioned the same. I couldn't seem to do that here. If you can get it equipt just the way you want, its probably a better value than the SR5 assuming they are dealing on them.

I will admit though, I do have scoop envy!! :D (even though it blocks forward visability by 58%)

Another little thing is the telescoping wheel which I think only came on certain models. The heated mirrors, while only used about 10 times a year for me, are great. I got the leather shifter in my '03 Sport and I'm glad about that because it is the one I prefer. Also didn't the SR5's NOT have a leather wrapped wheel? That is almost a must for me as far as little thigs go. Fog lights, xreas, scoop, bigger brakes and rims all added up for me.

I'm sure it has been discussed before... but why does the V8 SE only have a 4-speed automatic???

All 05 4Runners have the 5 speed. The 03/04 V6 had the 4speed.
