SR5, what does it mean?

Depends on the year you are looking at. The standard/optional equipment has changed over the years. For example here is a link for 1987 options.

I found it here. Most of his years, after 1987, have this info.
 
It just means the truck has an upgraded trim package, and it seems that there wasnt a "standard" SR5 package, so it could be any variable of trim upgrades... but back in the day (pretty sure it was a wednesday) the S stood for Sport, R was the engine code and it had to be a 5 speed. SR5.

I have an SR5 with a automatic...
But,,, I think it orginally (in the 70s) stood for Sport Ralley 5 speed. I think the term just got re-used over the years
 
sport rally 5 speed. it doesnt really apply anymore and its more for a trim level, basic, sr5, limited. also heard Sport, R series engine, 5 speed

my 88 runner is a SR5 model and automatic so it just a trim level now
