got the starter contacts from the dealer this morning, but the guy said their were 2 plungers in the catalog for the starter on my 4r. to get the right plunger i would have to pull the starter out and read the number on it. i think what im trying to find out is my starter a 1.4kw or a 1.8kw starter. anyone happen to know without me pulling it out? thanks guys 99 3.4L V6 limited

I don't know--but I have been researching the same question as I figure I am about due for this to happen to me. I figure I might as well buy the parts for when it does. This is the one point that is not really dealt with in the threads I have read. Others have posted that the 1.8 goes on all auto trans and cold-weather package manuals. Look for the 1.4 on manuals without heated seats and mirrors. I have no idea if this is true but it sure sounds good.
I also found this place that will sell you contacts and plunger for $26.95 and claims to have experts on the other end of their 800 number. I'm planning on taking a chance if my starter starts to not start, but I have no idea if they are any good.

I would love some feedback on this place (NationsAutoElectric.com).
You can try plugging your VIN into Toyodiy.com--for me, they only list the 1.4kW which sounds right for my manual non-cold package V6. You would think the dealer could do this if it was that easy.

I ran it though Toyodiy. Unlike mine, it shows both possibilities for the starter. Curious to see what his results are.

Ok well with VIN it still did not depic what starter it has so i asked my manager thats been around for 33 years doing toyota parts and he said if you live in a state that is considered a cold spec state you should have the 1.8kw starter if not its the 1.4kw thats the difference. I pulled a Window sticker on it and still didnt tell me anything. but here are the part# for the 1.8kw starter. contacts 28226-72010, 28226-54380 plunger: 28235-54380
If this helps. there should also be a sticker on the starter take some brake cleaner and wipe it off and you should be able to read it then and it should say on there.
P.S. in a cold spec state the starter and alt. are gonna always be the larger wattage or volts do to haveing to work harder when its cold.

These should be the part#'s this is what im getting with you VIN in my work computer which for Toyota's only.

Been trying to find solenoid contact and plunger replacement kit for 2008 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6.
Dealer told me it doesn't exist and there is no part number for it; said I had to replace entire starter.
Called several parts shops around town and no one has them for an '08. Looked online and I'm not having any luck...
My starter is fine, just need to replace contacts and plunger as I've had a few non-start up click fests as of late.

I found out the same thing in my research that the Auto Trans models have the 1.8kw and the manuals have the 1.4kw. I'm guessing there's more resistance to turn over an Auto compared to a Manual? Makes sense I guess.
Here's my part numbers related to my 2000 SR5 3.4L 4x4:
My Starter is Toyota Part #28100-62030
Denso Part Number for my Starter #228000-4082 (1.8kw)
Part numbers for the contacts #28226-54340 & #28226-72010
Part number for the Plunger/Magnet #28235-54380
Cost me $69. They give me a little bit of a discount, I think 10%.
I'm shopping for starter parts.
Wouldn't it be relatively the same cost to get a new Denso 1.8KW than 2 contacts and a new plunger?

Denso is also not as good as we think. I bought a denso distributor cap for my corolla. It came in a denso box and the distributor cap is NOT a denso. It was made in W. Germany. I bought it from denso website.
If your problem is the contacts, just get the contacts. Like I said in one of the previous threads, the toyota starters are for life.

I know you said you don't like aftermarket parts but I can't imagine paying $70+ for some little copper parts and a plunger.
I just picked this up from Amazon. $13 bucks and free 2 day ship with Prime.
This is for the 1.8kw starters.
It doesn't show it it the pics, but it also comes with 6 contacts of various sizes.
Appears to be decent quality too. While not a full rebuild kit, it has the plunger and contacts so that's enough for me.

Seems Toyota includes the non-copper parts is the only advantage, but they don't seem necessary for this repair.
I assume you only did contacts and plunger from this kit and nothing else??

I should have clarified that I just got kit and haven't installed yet. But yes, when I pull the starter, I'm only doing the contacts and plunger.
I can understand guys wanting to replace everything they can since it's a pain to pull the starter to begin with, but my truck is a California truck and I'm not anticipating wear issues outside of the contacts and plunger.
I've seen rebuild kits online that have the bolts and washers and all that too. Would still be cheaper by at least half of the OEM stuff.
