hey, i recently purchased a 94 4runner, 3.0 manual. Went to start her up last night and the motor would not crank over, i had been having battery trouble recently but just installed a new battery, so i thought it was odd it would be dead already, so i push started the vehicle, next morning it started fine, this afternoon it would not start again, i turn the key over to start position and it makes one single click then nothing, but when vehicle is running and i test to see if starter will engage, it engages right aways. This seems odd to me, any insight would be much appreciated!

Just to rule out the battery, connect a multimeter to it and see what voltage it is putting out. They are 12v batteries so anything above 10 is good. If in fact your battery is dead I would start questioning your alternator. You can take it to any auto parts store and they can test it for you.
Next I would check battery cables and terminals. Make sure all your grounds are in good shape and not corroded or broken.

help is indeed what i am after, i checked the battery, everything checked out fine, pulled all wiring connections apart and used electrical contact cleaner and sand paper to ensure a good connection, still no results. Then i took the starter out and hooked up wires with straight power from the battery, Starter immediately engaged, Re installed the starter and found myself back where i started. But if you do have some wands kicking around i will take one:flipoff:

Shorted Cell
Check battery for shorted cell. Depending on conditions the battery will at times seem completely dead. The starter draws the most amps, any where from 80-90 for min.up to 160-180 amps.
High amperage like that will cause batteries (with manufacturing defects) to internally short out. Your voltage will go to zero & the battery will seem dead.
Start it later on or next day & it will seem fully charged. The next time the solenoid just clicks turn on inside overhead ligh, etc & try to start it again.
If whatever you turned on goes out yet comes back when the key is released You have a plate in one of the cells warping & touching the plate next to it.

Ok, so at the risk of repeating everything that's on the website you've been linked to, what happens when you test the starter on the truck? Did you bypass the 12v supply wire? Did you jump across the solenoid? Did you create a brand new ground strap, and test it to make sure it's solid? As long as you had the starter out, did you crack the solenoid and check the condition of the contacts and plunger ring inside?
Took battery out and brought it back to the parts store i bought it from, they hooked it up to their fancy battery flux capacitor tester thingy and the results were.............. Dead cell. Warrantied the battery, gave me a new one, Installed the new battery and truck started right up. I cranked the starter over numerous times without actually starting the motor to see if it would eventually show signs of a dead spot, nothing at all. All seems well, Thanks for the help
