Starter or ignition switch?

So I've had a couple cases of my runner not wanting to start, when I flip it to start nothing, I repeat sometimes it start and other times I have to do it a couple times. This is why I'm thinking ignition. But I also have times where it turns over slowly sounds like the battery is going dead. Which I have replaced. Should I start by replacing the starter or switch?

The most common thing would be the contacts in the starter. Look through the threads on replacing those. I don't see many people having to replace the ignition switch on these.

Slow cranking would not be the ignition switch.

You should start by diagnosing the problem. Do you have a volt meter?

They really sound like classic starter contact symptoms. If starter is original and they have never been done, consider just doing them. I just had the starter out to do my clutch, and so I did mine as PM. At 165k they were badly worn (well, one side was) and trouble was coming. They are probably end-of-life on all these 3G trucks.

So if it fixes it, all is good. (I give it at least 75% probability.) If it doesn't, you are out less than $20 and are good for a long-time on the contact issue. Then go troubleshoot the other issue, whatever it may be, if you have to. Your call.

I just bought a 2002. Turns over fast and starts great. Today after work it was turning over sluggishly but started. Drove it home started it a few more time and still didn't sound right. Went back out a few hours later and it turned over like normal. I'm assuming its prob the mentioned contacts also but it isn't clicking like most with that problem have mentioned. It's showing 14.4 running and 12.6 after setting a couple hours.

I orders a set of contacts, I'll tackle it next weekend thanks for the help.

I don't know if it's absolutly necessary but did you order a plunger as well?
It's one of those things that might as well be replaced since your already doing the contact. From the dealer it's not very much, but like I said I'm not sure it's necessary to change.

maybe someone can answer that for us?

I see this is a resurrected thread, but were are you guys getting your contacts from? OEM, or is aftermarket OK?

Got up under mine today and the starter is covered in oil. The valve covers are poring. Then I saw that all of the bolts were loose on them. I tightened he ones that are accessible. It's about time to pull it apart for some new gaskets. I prob slowed them down for now but all that oil on the starter is prob why its acting funny.
