Starting Issue

Hey guys and gals.

I'm having an intermediate starting problem. About 2-3 weeks ago I went to start my 4Runner and it wouldn't crank. When I turned the key to "ACC" everything was good. The radio would work and the lights would come on. All the interior lights also functioned.

Fast forward to tonight. I get out of class and try to start it and have the exact same problem. The last time all I had to do was wait an hour or so and it started. This time I disconnected the negative terminal and reconnected it. Fired right back up like nothing was wrong.

Over all it seems to be running fine.


I could really use some help guys. I don't know why it only happens every so often.




I'm also not sure if it's related to a random stalling problem I had about two months ago.

It's just weird because it's so random. All of the interior lights work, the radio works, the lights on the dash come on, but when you go to crank it everything goes dead. It doesn't even try to start.


I haven't messed with any grounds in a while. Probably 3-4 months at least.
 
I agree with BTO, sounds like contacts. Don't bother disconnecting terminals, just turn the key back off and then try it again. Or open and shut your door and try again.
 
my 88 i had did this it was the workings of the starter relay wire going out. the wire that tells the start to kick on from the tunring of the key. it got so bad that i run a hot wire from a switch to the start and used it to start the turck. it worked like a charm and u still had to have the key turned onto on to get it to start.

I had this little issue myself. I turn the key and lights and radio come one but when I fully turn the key it clicks and all power goes off. It's happened about 4 times and each time I move the + cable on the battery and will get power back on and start like nothing happened.

Any ideas?
 
Are your battery terminals clean? Have you done *anything* electrical lately? I ask because this same thing happened when I added my rear lights. I connected to the battery, but not on the main screw on the positive cable, but rather on one off to the side. It worked fine for a few days, then all of a sudden I would get what you are getting. Disconnect, reconnect, things would be fine for a little while. When I moved my power wire to the main screw, the problem went away for good. I don't know why, but it was like there was an arc or something happening that killed all power. Here are details of mine:

I've done nothing electrical. Cleaned the post, the previous owner used petroleum jelly(Vaseline). Tightend them back up and nothing happened for about 3 weeks but just yesterday it did it.
 
Check the fuses. I had one of the 40 amp fuses go bad which resulted in the starter only getting .06 volts instead of 12.5.

I had the same issue turn up lately. Might want to check your battery terminal connectors on both sides; I found that on my negative side the connector was cracked almost all the way through.

I am not a mechanic but would look into these first.
This is based on that you did not add anything to the car and it was working before.
If when you start your dead car and you hear a clicking sound but the car does not start and it will take a couple crank to start the car, I would check starter contact.
If there is no clicking dead silent I would check the below detail.
Step I would check
1. Check your Alternator (when the alternator is going bad all light,radio and dash still function.
2. Check your battery(it could be a weak battery)
3. Check battery (connection/terminal
