Hello all! My 2017 SR5-P is up for it's 5k mile service. I bought my T4R new so it came with the "ToyotaCare". I've put about 5,100 miles on the vehicle in a little over a month. It's been up and down the Rocky Mountains several times and some light off roading in Moab and Monument Valley. This is my first Toyota and T4R so I'm not really sure what to expect from them. My question is for the 5k mile service is there anything outside of the ToyotaCare that I should have them do?

you may want to have them change the oil. the 5k service is basically a glorified tire rotation. if you look through your paperwork there is a service manual that explains what Toyota recommends. the top is automatic the bottom you only need to do if you have done any "unusual" driving, like in the snow, off road, up a mountain, in the extreme cold, extreme heat etc... so basically everything.

Lock the glove box so they don't try to sell you a cabin air filter replacement for $50

I would def do an oil change. While under the Toyota Care program my dealer only charged me for the oil for oil changes more frequent than the 10k interval. So it was like $36 for each of those non-scheduled oil changes.

It's understandable if they actually try to sell you it around 30k though (same goes for the engine air filter).

Dealerships (and even independent shops) only steal from the uninformed. Knowing what to expect and having a modicum of understanding of what needs to be done in terms of preventative maintenance on vehicles in general will save you $$$.

On my last Tacoma, the dealer told me I needed a new air filter ($40something installed). I politely declined, and proceeded to buy the OEM filter from Rock Auto for $8 shipped. When I went to replace it, I found the filter crammed into the housing and so crumpled up it wouldn't catch flies.

Good idea on locking the glove box so they can't even check it (need to give them the valet key though).

if you don't go to the dealership for the 5k service, record in the service book that you did it yourself

I installed a TRD CAI at 25k.

When I went in for my 30k service I told them the air filter was good to go and I had also replaced the cabin filter at about 20k.

Dealer said they would credit me the amounts of both filters. I said replace the wiper blades and fill the small chip in the windshield and we'll call it even.

Just had mine in for the 5,000 miles service - it's basically a tire rotation and topping off the washer fluid thing.

I paid $49 for the additional oil change that I requested.

Spend a little time with your 4Runner and learn how to do some of the basic maintenence...it's all fairly straight-forward and routine, including oil changes. A lot of the oil change guys, at the dealership, are new-hires....an oil change is a critical part of any vehicle maintenence and imo too important to trust a noob. Do a search, lots of threds here about dealership oil change screw-ups....stripped/missing bolts, wrong fiter cartridge installed, over torqued filter housings, leaks....

Can I ask what the rationale is for giving them money for an oil change that isn't deemed necessary?

Before stating any kind of contamination comments, please be able to provide oil test results from new vs that is extracted if you are going to. Broscience doesn't answer questions, facts do.

I'm actually curious if anyone has actual evidence that this is necessary.

I have belly armor on my 4Runner and it's annoying to change the oil on it such that I've invested in some aftermarket toys to make the job easier. I won't take it to a dealer to service because the guys on basic maintenance are graded on volume and won't take the time to do the job right and might damage my vehicle (or if they're smart just refuse to work on it).

Example: The kid at the alignment shop torqued the bejeezus out of my lugnuts such that I had to crank up the air impact wrench to max and hammer on it to free the lugnuts. Torque spec on those is 85ft-lbs but I guarantee the tech torqued them to well of 150ft-lbs because he was in a rush to get the truck off the lift and out the door so he could start on the next customer's vehicle.

learned a lesson

years ago,-30 degrees Celsius,was out on the highway did a 360 in my taco, said a little prayer held on tight and put it on two wheels and into the ditch, sidewall got pushed in slow leak developed, couldn't get the lugnuts off, 2 guys dancing on a long pipe finally loosened the suckers, Do it yourself.

Sorry to kinda hijack this thread but I can't start a new thread yet. 'Want to ask about "ToyotaCare".

I bought my '17 SR5 from Nalley Toyota in Roswell, GA back in December during the Toyotathon sales gimmick/event. My wife swears they were saying we get 4 years of free oil changes as part of this deal.

My ToyotaCare brochure showed up in the mail last week and it says two years / 25K miles and mentions oil changes at every 5K miles. I don't see anything in my paperwork about 4 years... EDIT: Just noticed that for a T4R, oil changes hit every 10K so this must be a more generic brochure from ToyotaCare?

So, two questions:

1) Are the oil changes actually not included with this ToyotaCare thing?

2) Has anyone seen anything about 4 years of oil changes anywhere else either with standard "toyotacare" or as an additinal sales incentive?

it's 10k miles for oil changes, it follows your service manual

it's possible the dealer is offering the extra oil changes themselves. did the dealership offer an additional maintenance plan beyond toyotacare?

1) Toyotacare includes oil changes at standard factory intervals. For you (and me) that's 1 per 10k mi. Two free oil changes. Better than none!

2) A local dealer offers lifetime free oil changes. Dealers can offer whatever they want as sales incentives. Of course, I doubt that dealer uses factory oil. It's not cheap. And there is a catch, as they must perform all other factory service: "Free" oil changes for life.
