Steelies and pizza cutters

I had to rotate the tires on the 4Runner today, so I thought I would take some time and mount up the wheels/tires I am running on my FJ40 and see how steelies and tall and skinny tires looked on the 4Runner. The tires are BFG M/T 255/80R17s and the wheels are FJ cruiser steelies sandblasted and painted a Massey Ferguson Gray, rattle can job. That is one of the toughest "out of the can" paints I have seen.

I took the 4Runner out about a mile down the road and came back, no rubbing at all but it was all on road and not too much articulation of the suspension. I did turn it lock to lock in tight turns and never had rubbing issues, but it was close. If I were going to run these tires full time I would lift it (my trail is currently stock) or at least run a front leveling kit and add some spacers for a bit of a better stance.

Yeah it is dirty, but tomorrow is bath day! :banana:

When I had a little rubbing issue, it was lock to lock but only in reverse. You might want to try that if you haven't already. Be Safe.

I tried forward and reverse, all in an on road setting tho, and no rubbing. Clearance was very minimal tho.

Switched everything back now, the steelies are back on the 40 and the TE wheel/BFG A/Ts are back on the 4Runner.

Man you should get a second set of those for the runner, that looks really good and I never really liked those steel wheels before this.

Your BFG AT 275/70's are 32.2" in diameter.
Your BFG MT 255/80's are 33.3" in diameter.

So you are only loosing .55" at any given spot for clearance in the wheel well. With the tire being skinnier, I would think the clearance at full stuff would be very close to the same.

Also, I thought only the KM2's came in 255/80r17?

Yes they are KM2's, I should have said that earlier instead of just M/Ts.

As a kind of old school thing. Would look good with MG too I bet.

I have steelies on my MG SR5.. and really am contemplating looking for someone to sell my SR5 wheels / tires to, and get me another set of steelies for the summer days. I love the way the car looks on them.

Just out of curiousity, what are you guys with the 255's running for air pressure? I JUST put a set of 255/85r16 on my 2004 and havent quite figured it out yet. Yes. I did do the reading on here and it has been too wet to do the chalk test thing.

I had given my photographer the day off, and my camera work is clearly not up to par.

Nah, it was like 25* that day and I had just swapped out 4 tires off the FJ40 and onto the 4runner, so an asthetically pleasing photo was wayyyy down on my list of prioritites.
