Steering Play Mod Complete

From my research, there was a different shaft used in 96 and the first 1/2 of 97. No slip joint set up. Nothing to loosen or fix either. I haven't looked too seriously into the differences but I think the early shaft is thinner and the later is thinker due to the sliding set up, it's noticeable if you look from underneath.

I (we) have a 97 AND a 98!!! Lucky guy I am. Maybe the next time they are out playing together I'll take a look and compare.

I'm thinking about doing this tomorrow when I have a little time in the afternoon.

It seems the disassembly is pretty straight forward (famous last words) but a couple things worry me; forgive my ignorance!

1. Can the roll pin simply be pounded in with a hammer or should I use a punch?

2. What specifically needs to be marked for reassembly purposes so as to ensure everything is back the way it was originally? The cases where the wheel became hard to turn towards the end of rotation after this fix worries me a bit.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Why not just tack weld it? Simple and done. Mark your steering wheel splines so you get that back on straight. There isn’t anything else to mark. Also, it made a MASSIVE difference in the steering feel of mine. The easiest simplest and single best thing I’ve done to my 4runner.
