Steering Rack Recommendations

Howdy. I'm looking for recommendations on aftermarket steering rack replacements, whether rebuilt or new. I simply can't afford an OEM unit so I'd like to hear others experience with these.

I think if you do a bit of searching you'll find that alot of brands are really just remanufactured oem racks, I can't remember off the top of my head but I want to say you can pick up one for around 200-300 bucks.....google t4r 3rd steering rack, that should pull up plenty of info
 
Whole frontend is apart for a CV sheared off in the diff. Truck has 204,000 miles with unknown maintenance history, and everything has little leaks under there. Not gonna bother with rebuilding it myself.
 
because you trust a min wage employee using god knows what parts to do a better job than you could do yourself?

Take the price of a rebuilt rack:

subtract core price
shipping
sales % for the auto parts store
and then figure out how much money they actually invest into the rebuild quality.

Personally I can't see doing it any other way, but at 187k my rack has only needed the guide bushing replaced which is about a 5 min job.
 
Got instructions on rebuilding my own? I'm in need of a reman'd rack...mine is notchy and difficult at slow speed.
 
FYI - I found that Toyota Parts East sells OEM racks for $566. P/N 44250-35042

This is probably the route I'll go. Looks like it includes inner TREs. I already have new OEM outer TREs to go in.
 
Going to bring this thread back from the dead. Searching the forum for any "upgrade" options I have for a new rack. I figure if I'm putting the money out I may as well look at something better then stock. Are there any options? Thanks

Nothing is better than the OEM rack. They last anywhere from 100-300k miles without leaking.

My aftermarket new rack (not reman) cost me near $400. Both inner tie rod ends failed and it leaks. Been on there for about 3 years now.
 
My rack is original and not leaking yet (294,000 miles). I too would recommend Toyota oem. Expensive but the best. If you decide on rebuilt, then you must accept the fact there is a high likelyhood of future leaks. You have been warned.:tea:
 
Ok good to know. Is there anything essential that I must purchase with the rack? I've heard the hoses should be fine and don't need to be replaced unless they are damaged.

I would purchase a set of poly bushings. The OEMS will last a long time but its nice how tight the rack feels after poly's.

A lot of the cost of the OEM rack are the ITRE's that come installed on the rack. They sell for $130 at most online dealers each.

I concur with bushings. I replaced mime with polys and it significantly firmed up steering.:boink:

AAE Steering Rack from Rock Auto. People say this is the same setup Safari LTD is running minus the internal brass bushings. You can't beat the price for $231 new so no core returns. When my rack takes a dump this is what I'm going to get.
 
I will say this from personal experience. If you can get a rack WITHOUT the ITREs do that and order some Toyota ITREs to put on it. You'll be happier longer. And I don't think Safari racks are available anymore.
