Steering wheel shake saga ongoing

I have had a steering wheel shake for a very long time and I was considering doing new brakes but I wanted to figure out exactly what was going on .my mechanic suggested new brake rotors in the front which I went ahead and did still very shaky when braking above 40 mph. He then suggested we do a full brake bleed and also swap the pads. Still shaking alot! He then suggested that it might be a series caliper so we went ahead and swapped the one on the left which seemed a bit tight. Still shaking. I then went and got new tires to eliminate the possibility of the unbalanced tires causing the issue.

After new tires still shaking.

At this point there's only one thing left to change on the front brakes which is the caliper on the right if this doesn't work then I'm really at a loss I don't see how shaking in the steering wheel while braking could be coming from anywhere other than the brakes in the front.

Have you checked the wheel bearings for any play?

Upper ball joints?
Upper control arms were the last old thing I replaced on front suspension which caused all sorts of random shakes at different speeds.

One day I leaned down and grabbed the top of the tire and pulled out and could see and feel how shot they were

I had this pretty bad, and the fix was not cheap but 100% effective:

- new tires, w/wheels ultra carefully balanced
- alignment
- new axles and cv boots -- mine had totally perished and there was no grease in there
- lubed driveshafts

Car drives smooth as glass now.

Yes. Your mechanic. This guy has no clue how to go about performing diagnostic procedures, so he's just throwing parts at the problem at your expense.

Exactly how were your tires/wheel balanced, what type of balancing was used?

All I know is that it was "road force balancing", whatever that means. I sought out a place that was known for meticulous work and it really did the trick. I didn't know what was up with the front suspension but to their credit it does drive like a new car now.

Thanks, I have a similar issue and numerous regular wheel balancing hasn't solved the issue, "Road Force Balancing" is the best and I was guessing that what they did to solve your issue, just wanted to confirm, unfortunately no one in my immediate area offered this service as it takes specialized and expensive equipment to do the job and not all garages want to make the investment, looks like I'm going to have a drive a ways to get it done.

What did you have to paid for the balancing if you don't mind saying?

When you say shake and replacing all sorts of brake component’s, is your shake only when breaking ?

Replacing rotors without doing pads, especially suggested by a mechanic, is a waste of money and would potentially only make the issue worse.

I had a shake that came about when braking, my issue was a combination of worn out outer and inner tie roads and shot rotors, even though they were pretty new. I didn’t follow proper break in procedure and they didn’t last. Replaced tie rods, did an at home alignment, and replaced the pads and rotors with nice brembos and did a proper break in and no issue so far at all. And this is on 35s that proper need to be balanced after the last few off-road trip.

Always makes me mad hearing about “mechanics” just throwing parts at a problem to see what will fix it.
