Steering Wheel Swap Mod

I was going to say, my 06 SR5 model has the steering wheel with buttons, I use them way too much. So convenient. Here's hoping you pull the trigger!!

It's definitely doable, I'm not familiar with all the factory head units toyota offers; however, The first thing I would check into is if the factory head unit has a remote wire to plug into. The next thing to check is taking your air bag off and check to see if there are any wiring connections behind the air bag tucked up not being used. These would be the wires that a remote would plug into. They run through the steering wheel into the dash and over to the radio.

If your head unit doesn't have a remote wire you can purchase an after market head unit with "OEM steering wheel control ready" then you purchase a little product that takes the input from your new controls and sends the signal to the radio to use the command. I can say there is a bit of lag in this setup. Where my factory head unit was spot on if i pushed the next track button it went right to the next track. Now when i push next track it takes it a second to think. As well the volume button has to be practically held down. Where before I could just tap it a few times and it would bring the volume down

Just have your steering wheel removed and ready for me tomorrow, Nick! ;):

Well if your going to go to the trouble of changing the steering wheel you might as well get one with bluetooth controls...you'll want them one day

Is it easy to turn off if you have company in the car? I don't like everyone hearing my dirty conversations. ;):

I just wanted to give a special thanks to cacoghill for stepping forward and offering to trade me steering wheels. His 05 Sport has the controls and he'd rather it didn't.

After a bit of research I've found that the part numbers for the 05 are different of the 07. The controls are actually attached to the side of the airbag. We could maybe make it work if we traded the entire steering wheel, but his is leather wrapped and mine is vinyl. I wouldn't want to give up my leather one. :(

That was very kind of you to offer!

I'll keep looking at options. It's about $600 for just the airbag with controls. I'll see if I can locate a used one, or even find a way to get the controls converted to work.

Hey Terri !! Did you ever get the ball rolling with this mod you wanted to do? I remember seeing this thread and thought of ya. Anyway, totally looks doable without replacing the whole airbag ($$)
