Steering wheel upgrade with controls

I have a hairbrained idea and I would like some input. I have a 2000 SR5 with stock radio. I am about to be upgrading to an aftermarket setup that can interface with stock steering wheel controls, with appropriate adapter of course. What I am wondering is, has anyone taken a wheel from another toyota that has the controls and put it in their 4runner and successfully controlled an aftermarket radio with it? If so what all was needed?

I know this is crazy but if this is possible I have a plan to hide the headunit behind a 7" tablet where the radio is currently.

Any input? Besides I'm crazy? :)

It's very well possible. Shouldn't be too hard to run the wiring, pretty close and its all within the dash. The only issue might be matching up the airbag connectors with a different steering wheel. You may have to check compatibility with later model 4Runners or another Toyota one to see if they will fit into your column.
