steering wheel vibration from 40-60...sometimes

In mesa AZ, I got a call back and was told to go to a Toyota dealership a few miles away as they have the machine I need, I just hope they don't give me trouble for my treadwrights :/
cool. did ya check the locator thing on the website? i'd recommend googling 4runner lug centric. 4runner road force. + vibration or shimmy. just so ya get a sense of why this is important even if it is not the cause of your wobble woes.

Yeah I did thanks for the tip.

torque spec and such

Yeah I did thanks for the tip.

when the local Les Schwab did my lug centric road force balance I was pleased to see them reinstall the tires properly, while the truck was still up in the air. They put on a wheel, screwed the lug nuts on hand tight, snugged them down in proper sequence with a torque wrench, then reset the torque wrench to the 83lb spec and tightened them down fully. It reassured me that they knew exactly what they were supposed to do, why they were supposed to do it, and were actually employing a 'best practices' process.
Big difference from some guy ignorantly zip zip zipping them on with an air gun without regard to sequence or torque spec.

Check your rack&pinion mounting bushing. Energy Suspension makes a poly bushing kit for the 4runners/tacomas because the rubber bushing get weak and cause movement/vibration from the rack. Worn bushings could possibly cause vibration to the steering wheel. Just a thought.

I am also having the same problem. I resurfaced my rotors, replaced upper/lower ball joints, and tie rod ends. That helped only slightly. Then I replaced my worn to hell steering rack bushings...that was a PITA. That helped much more noticably. I then realized my calipers were sticking slightly and more to the driver side. I have cleaned them and greased them twice already and it still occurs. I also don't think it is a driveshaft issue because when it occurs, I keep my hand on the shifter and can't feel any vibration in the transmission.

I hope y'all can figure it out :ybrick:

You'll drive yourself crazy

Here's some good reading from a guy that has tried just about everything.

I have the same issue. After reading countless posts, I don't believe there is a definitive answer.

I think this guy targeted the drive shaft after replacing EVERYTHING.

I was on the same path replacing ball joints and TE rods, shocks...

I decided to live with it.

When it warms up I'm going to look at my brake calipers then drive shaft.

Good luck

So im completely puzzled...I just got my tires balanced as I had a really bad vibration at about 65-70 and now its butter smooth after 60 but I get this vibration in the steering wheel from 40-60 but its not all the time, its about 50% of the time. Anyone have something like this happen to them?

-Alex

Hi Alex, did you ever get this resolved? I have the exact same symptoms on my 2015.

I had a similar issue but had severely worn tires. New tires helped solve 80% of the issue then I went after the steering column. Did the tack weld fix (I used JB weld) and plastic shim in the universal joint and it drives like a new truck.
