Get it road forced balanced. If your dealer isn't doing it find one that will. Had the vibration on my 15 SR5 at 500 miles. Dealer road forced balanced all four wheels, vibration gone!!!!

Every Toyota dealer should have a GSP9700, the correct cones, and the adapter that bolts through the holes for the wheel studs. Not all the techs actually use all of these things and even Toyota dealer balances are hit or miss. Most shops are about 75% miss.

I'll say one thing for my dealer.. They have truly taken this issue on. Head on really. After replacing the steering gear the issue persisted (surprise!) 60-80 like clockwork. They took the car today to discount tire for a re-balance.. Noticeably better.. 60-70 near gone. 70-80 noticeable. They replaced (at their cost) the toyo open country's that we just put on with a set of bfg at ko2's. They are fairly convinced (I'm not) that the Toyos are the culprit because of their super hard compound and notorious for a rougher ride.. We shall see.. BUT I am grateful for a setvice team that seems to truly care

Call or email Byron at Tru-Line in Bellevue, Washington. They are alignment and wheel gurus, and if anyone knows where all of this will eventually wind up, he will. If this is becoming a known issue, he's likely already familiar with it and may have some good advice. He just diagnosed and fixed a severe shimmy in my (new, old) 4runner - steering rack and balance issues - and he knows his stuff.

My white 15' LE did, I had added wheel spacers and took them back because of the shimmy. After I returned them the tires still shook at those exact speeds. My dealership road forced balanced them and it fixed it. I have the LE with the 20"s. I am now waiting to see if this happens to my blue 15" LE.

My LT 265-70-17 E Toyo Open Country are very stiff and have flat spots from overnight parked. So they tend to give me some vibration the first couple miles every day until they start running round..... It's to be expected on E rated tires.

And on very windy days (cross winds) I get some pulling too.

I have a 2015 Toyota r runner limited with 1500 miles on it, has intermittent vibration between 60 and 70 mph. Had tires road force balanced at dealer with no change. Dealer says its normal....suggestions?

Had it intermittently on a 2016 TEP/KDSS. After suspension upgrade (Toytec Boss/Total Chaos) and alignment, it's completely gone. Steering wheel is now rock solid.

Have it balanced elsewhere. If it is only when the tires are cold (under 15 miles at 60mph+) ignore it.

This is good to know as I have 900 miles on my 2015 and was starting to worry about the shake...but this answers it. It only shakes intermittently around 45ish+ and I think when cold. Most of my drives are up to 70 MPH, 18 miles and about 30 mins. Otherwise i will have it looked at to have a road forced balance.

Had no steering wheel vibration stock

Ever since I've installed the Cooper AT3s stock size, C rated, I've had steering wheel vibrations around 65-70
Had balancing done at Discount Tire several times, it lessens but always comes back

It can be fixed two ways , they can update your rack or swap it out completely . I have heard of them doing both ways. It's a weak steering rack preload spring issue.tire rebalance will not cure this problem. But it is fixable .

Any idea as to the cost of replacing the steering rack (as I'm assuming Toyota will refuse to warranty it due to the lift and bigger tires)? Is there a particular shop/dealership that you would recommend (as I'm in So Cal as well).

Really appreciate the help, as this issue has been driving me crazy!

It's a very annoying thing this shimmy .Well , if your sure nothing is worn out and the alignment and balance is on , what I would do is put on a set of stock tires and see what happens. If it still happens I would put to stock and get the rack changed under warranty. I have found no fix other than changing the rack unless you are very mechanical you could try and change the internals of your existing rack to the upgraded spring and valve. Your right Toyota will probably blame the lift and tires at this point .Also check you caster , it likes lots of caster and that helps . Whats your build date ?

If you can get a solid test drive in (local roads and highway speeds) and don't notice anything, I wouldn't hesitate. I had the issue from the factory and noticed on our drive home from the dealer. Took it back the next morning, had it Road Force balanced, tech said he selected the "passenger vibration" option, supposedly which goes beyond vibrations the driver will feel through a steering wheel and tries to pickup on subtleties the passenger might notice. Anyway, 2k miles later and no recurrence. Just my two cents.

Had this issue when I drove mine off the lot. Now with 5700 miles on it, the situation has just gone away.

This is the 5th wishbone suspension vehicle I've owned. And it seems this suspension is most sensitive to wheel imbalance issues vs. McPherson, etc. I have a good tire shop near me that seems to be able to address balance issues, though sometimes it take 2 trips. You just need to keep at it--certain tires like Blizzaks seem to cause more balance problems and I've stayed away from them.

Mine does the same thing. Most noticeable between 2k-4k RPM.

I took it to the dealer twice for it. Finally they said it was "completely normal, all 4 runners do it, we drove other ones to compare" and called the issue closed.

It still annoys me when it does it. Feels cheap.


The "google" diagnosis is an engine mount, for this sort of problem. FWIW.
I've also experience the problem in a Subaru, when the steering pump was going bad.

i had a slight vibration in my steering wheel, a good rotation and balance should get it all cleaned up
