stiff gas pedal/throttle lube

First off, thanks for all of you who gave the great advice on the 'stiff gas pedal' problem.

I took your advice and lubed the throttle line where you had recommended and it worked great - for about a day. Then it just went right back to it's 'stiff' self.

I've done this twice now. Both times I simply used WD-40.

Do you think that silicone spray will have a different effect - if so, I'll pick some up and try that. Otherwise, I'm either gonna be stuck with the stiffy or I'm gonna have to replace the whole line.

I tried WD-40 and posted my results, but that was just after one day. My pedal is still stiff to this day and I think I'll buy a can of Silicon Spray and do it right.

It's amazing how 'smooth' it feels after first lubing it up with the WD-40, but for results that last more than a day or two?

I agree gonna have to try the silicone spray.

new throttle line cost?

In one of the earlier posts concerning the 'stiff gas pedal' issue, one user made the comment that if you don't know where the throttle line boot is maybe you shouldn't be toying with it.

Good advice.

Anyway, I'm just curious what kind of cost I'd be looking at for parts and labor if I had my mechanic simply replace it?

I had the same problem... The best thing to do is to replace the throttle cable... And all my problems were solved...
underneath the rubber that contacts the plastic and metal..

The rubber breaks and sticks.....

Thanks for your reply trboblu74tii - and that's a SWEET ride you've got there - I've always been envious of the black. Although, I'll survive with my Desert Dune 98.

Did you replace the throttle yourself? I'm just trying to get a guage on what this is going to run me to either do it myself or have my mechanic replace it.

So I got tired of lubing the throttle cable with WD-40 and have the softness only last 1-2 days. So instead, I purchased some Silicone Lubricant and lubed the throttle cable except for one more thing. Instead of just lubing the cable, I took off the rubber grommet that covers the tip of the throttle cable boot and sprayed a good amount inside the actual boot. Its been a few days now and the gas pedal has remained soft.

I was just curious how the 'lube' was holding up since you last sprayed it with silicone and removed the boot grommet?

I'm planning on trying it again this weekend.

To this day, the gas pedal is still as soft as the first day.

first thing, cables aren't meant to be lubed, at least not with a liquid lube. It might be ok with a bicycle, but i wouldn't do that to my car. I would use graphite powder, but only if you haven't already gummed it up with oil or silicone lube. If it's rust that's causing the problem, i would replace the cable. You cant see under the housing and you don't know how bad the interior is rusted, and what if it snaps?

I don't think it "gummed" it up after I lubed it with Silicone Spray. If it was a bad thing to do, it would have been worse or possible to have the throttle stick, but it really improved the pedal feel and is way softer them when it wasn't lubed. I really doubt there is any rust and it won't snap, never heard of throttle cables snapping.

the gumming up doesn't happen right away, just wait until the dust build up on the oil gets drawn into the cable.
