Still have a clunk

Ok, 08 4x4 v-6. Done took care of the other clunks on the front, BJ, Poly Bushings, wheel bearings.

Still getting one from the mid section of the vehicle,(while sitting in the ride).
At a dead stop going in reverse, tire in the gutter, give it some gas and clunk.
While driving forward, bumper to bumper traffic, jump to the next lane and gun it, clunk.


Got under there and checking the u-joints, no movement of any kind. Put it in neutral and block tires so it would be in relax mode. Then took a pipe wrench to it to give it some extra turning force. Now it hardly makes the clunk when I try to duplicate it.

So, had my daughter hold the brake loosely, and shift from rev-drive. Have a VERY, VERY faint clunk sound by the rear drive line u-joint. Can put my hand on the drive line and feel a thud/clunk feeling from it. Still no play with them.

Does anyone think possible U-JOINTS? And are the joints the same size front and rear, and with the front drive line, same size?

If anyone can think of what else it could be, point it out to me PLEASE.

I remember seeing a thread where it was stated to be normal. I didn't think it seemed normal, but I don't have any vibrations from the shaft as if they're going bad. Mine clunk as well. They may need a bit of grease.

When the sound was profoundly loud, it was a clunk/crunch sound and resembles a bad part that is on it's way to breaking.

I tend to off road in extreme situations like Rubicon trails, and don't wish for them parts to be making theses sound and prefer to be replaced if in question. Don't tend to carrry a complete auto parts store with me while on runs. And there not readily available on the trail.

No vibrations either and isn't the drive line clunk from not greasing.

Have you greased the u-joint zerk fittings lately? If not, grease the 6 fittings (4 u-joints, 2 slider joints).

Thanks for the try gentleman, I have no leaks, but, grease slinging on the under carriage from all the greasing I do.

Lube the spline joint of rear drive shaft. Will take ~ 10 zerks or so.

I would guess u-joints as well but have you checked the transmission mount?

Yes sir, thought that might be a possibility, and the engine mounts also.
I know you can get the sounds from there also, and had my fair share of them in my younger years.

I had a clunk that I heard in stop and go traffic. I believed it was the driveshaft. Dealer replaced it under warranty the week that I purchased the car. I thought a lubing of the joints might help, they just put in a new one.
