STOCK 1999 toyota 4runner vs. 2011 ford raptor

I'm pretty sure we all thought a raptor would beat a 1999 stock 4runner, right?
Wrong! Me and my buddy went up to Gorman here in California and I was like Ehh until I get the lift and everything ill baby it and I knew my friend was gonna go crazy. We get up there and I was like **** it!(from this point on my inner redneck took over) so after 5 hours of screwing around we left. But, my friends raptor now sounds like a rc car. And my 4runner is awesome. I forgot to mention the part of me stealing his girl during offroading ill post my YouTube links on my profile. Oh yea and rock crawling is the best when your in a stock 4runner beating a raptor. And I'm convinced 4L stands for tractor mode. I love my 4runner.

As I understand it (from an article I read in a car magazine) the Raptor is not set up for typical off-roading or rock crawling; it's set up for high-speed stuff like Baja racing. Now take your stock 4Runner to Baja and run it at 60-70 MPH and I'll bet the Raptor would eat your 4Runner (if the 4Runner survived very far at all). Different suspensions for different goals/purposes.

From your videos it doesn't look like you did much rock crawling or serious off-roading.

The raptor is not built for crawling, it's built for desert racing (and pulling a trailer, and hauling a payload, and looking cool, and having quality cup holders). Apples to oranges.

A stock 3rd gen 4runner will crawl better than any stock domestic market vehicle built since the mid 90's (IMO) with the exception of a handful of J**ps.

Dont get me wrong, I love my 4runner and have few other choices that I would take over it for a DD but the raptor would kill the 4runner in 99% of things. The single exception would be crawling.

I personally have ridden in multiple raptors from stock all the way up to fully built prerunners with 20+" front and 30+" rear travel and they are beasts. They are quick (not fast persay but quick compared to alot of vehicles) handle very well for a truck and are a blast to push fast through the desert even in stock form. 13" of travel is decent if setup properly and the raptor is set up very well.

As others have said, the raptor is built for desert running (where my heart lies) in style, and comfort, not crawling.

Again, even though I love my 4runner, if I had the choice between a brand new 0miles 3rd gen or a brand new raptor, I would have to choose the raptor.

I think this is where you misunderstood me. I was not talking a used 3rd gen and the money left over to put into it vs the cost of a new raptor. I was talking brand new vs brand new.

I wont dispute that 25K into a 3rd gen would beat a stock raptor but stock vs stock brand new, I would take the raptor (without the option for extra money to put into the 3rd gen)

The raptor is a comfortable, easy to drive useful pickup that comes well featured from the factory and has a full warranty to back it up.

Accounting for current prices on both a new loaded 4runner vs a new loaded raptor, the price difference isnt that much. Maybe $ a couple grand. A fully loaded 4runner is around $43,000 msrp. The raptor comes nearly fully loaded in the xcab (not the quad cab) for $44,000 msrp. This means that you wouldnt have much extra to put into the 4runner (this is assuming if the 3rd gen was still available brand new and followed current prices)

Even a fully loaded quad cab version only runs around $50,000. That gives you 7 grand to put into the 4runner. Supercharge it to get to the same power as the raptor, new A/T tires to match the raptor, Icon C/O's to match front travel, Icon 2.5 rear shocks and whatever springs to try and get close to the raptor, locker to match the locker in the raptor etc etc and that $7,000 is gone to be at a similar level.

So again, as much as I love my 4runner, given the choice of both brand new, I would take the raptor (mainly because I prefer desert running over crawling) if I was more of a crawler, who knows. They are both great vehicles.
