Stock Dueler H/T vs Revo???

Sorry if this has been covered, but I couldn't find it anywhere. is there a big difference between the stock Dueler H/T and a Revo? As far as I can tell, the tread pattern looks almost the same. Am I missing something, or should I just be really happy my Runner came with such great stock tires?

I would check out www.tirerack.com for the technical description of the differences. You can compare tires side to side. REad about the revo's construction and you will see the difference.

then read the reviews...about 80% hate the H/T...and they are alomsot to a "T" (pun intended) all Toyota owners driving Sequoias, 4Runners, Tundras, etc.

to be fair, I have 16,000 on the H/T and I am a fairly conservative driver. Fair in rain and that is because I drive carefully knowing that it tends to slip and slide. So far, no slipping and sliding when driving with care. Pattern on the H/T does not have good water evacuation routes to push out water as the tire rolls.

Decent on dry. But the tread is pretty thin to begin with and not very thick. Not very agressive for anything but light dirt roads. Have not gone 4 wheeling yet, but I don't do 4 wheeling.

I used to drive out in my Tahoe 4x4 to explore old mining towns--Garlock, Randsburg, Burro Schmidt's Tunnel; Indian reservations and the great outdoors like Monument Valley, Chinle, Kayenta, Pueblo Bonita, old trails in the Mojave Desert, etc. so I do travel on dirt, gravel, some mud, and trails.

Not driven on snow yet though I don't see much treat pattern for good snow traction.

I just don't have confidence that the H/T could be there when I get back to exploring again. I don't have confidence that it could do well in loose soil, slight mud, winter conditions when caught in a snow storm, rain donwpour, slop through run off channels, blistering heat on the desert or freezing cold in the winter, or shapr rocks nad gravel. The H/T tread does not protect the edges well and allows the sidal to be exposed where the BFG and the Revos have a fairly stout tread going edge to edge.

I have the Toyo Open COuntry A/T Load D on my Tahoe and the tread is thick with wide channels to flush out water adn thick edges to protect the sidewalls where it meets the tread.

Conclusion: the H/T are MEDIOCRE. It's Like Oklahoma, it's OK, not great, not wonderful, nothing to braga about, nothing I would spend good money on, it's OK.

As soon as I wear the H/T out, it's BFG or Revo, or Toyo.

no contest here,the revo is far superior in all aspects.i've run cross terrains and they were good except in deep snow.the revo out performs them in wet dry and snow hands down.it is the best tire i have had and i always search for the best,why run inferior tires on such a capable truck as the 4 runner.with excellant tires like the revo's the truck can perform the way it was intended to.i'll never understand putting ju

is revo available in oem 265/65/17 size?

i know revo comes in 265/70/17 which many suggest also fit the 2005 (4th gen 4runner) with 17 inch wheel. thanks.

Yeah you can get the Revos in 265/65/17 and 265/70/17. Most people tend to lift and upsize a bit for better capability in bad conditions.

Yes the stock size REVO is available. However it costs more that than the 265/70/17 REVOS, so why not upgrade and spend less?

Are you sure you are looking at the right tire? I have the H/Ts on my '03, and also have a set of REVOs which I put on for winter driving each year. I don't see how anyone can mistake one for the other. The tread design is totally different. And they drive very differently. The H/Ts are ok for a summer tire, but I wouldn't think of going through a winter without the REVOs.

You are totally right TechWrench, the site I was looking at had the wrong image for the Revo (either that or I just got them confused, nah). Now that I look at tirerack.com, it becomes obvious.

I must say though, that I'm not all that eager to put new rubber on yet, the stock tires have been working well for me. They have been handling all kinds of craziness with no problem. Of course maybe the trips would have been better with the Revos...

1) snows on/off for 3 months
2) snows heavily for 2 months
3) rain... spring... summer... gravel...
4) mostly inner city-driving with the occassional out-of-city trips on highways.

I have a limited.. and I don't want a tire that is.. TOO aggressive.. if you know what I mean. If I had a SE, then I wouldn't mind the revos.. but for a Limited... I thought I should stick to a "tamer" tire. But then again.. I could be wrong.

oh.. which tire would be louder on the road? the revos?

I don't have any experience with the cross terrains, so I can't offer a comparison with the REVOs. From my experience, the REVOs are the BEST wet/winter tire I have owned. I am sure there are those that will say there is a better winter tire out there, and others will say they know of a better AT tire. But, IMHO, the REVO is the best combination of the two. I have used mine for two upstate NY winters, and am not the least bit sorry I got them. They are the best wet weather tire I have owned. As for road noise, they are louder than the H/Ts, but not that much. And because I only use them in the fall/winter, I don't get to use them with the windows down very often. There have been some people reporting faster than desired tread wear, but I haven't noticed it myself. I do expect, because of the type of tread compound, that they will not last as long as some high mileage tires, but this tread compound is what gives you the enhanced traction so I am willing to trade some long life for performance. Plus, because I only run them in the winter, I expect them to not wear as much as if they were run all year long. I am putting about 6,000 miles a season on them. So I expect to get another 4-5 years use before I have to replace them. To me, the expense of a second set of winter tires is worth the cost when averaged over that many seasons. I do most of my driving on pavement, but during hunting season I do get to go off-road, so they work perfect for me. If you aren't going to do any off-road driving, you might not need something as 'agressive' as the REVO, but they still are a great on-road wet/winter tire, it's up to you.

Based on my experience, REVOS are the best tires for 4Runner. Winter, summer, any season. I'm using them all year round, perfect traction and low noise (for off-road tires).
