Stock head unit with aftermarket DVD entertainment?

We bought an 06 Limited with Nav. I did not get Toyota's DVD system because the flip-down screen is not acceptable to me, we want headrest screens. So now the quest is: Is it possible to still use the stock nav system's built-in electronic controls for the DVD system with an AFTERMARKET DVD system?

The Toyota parts guy AND the guy at the aftermarket place the dealer works with both agreed: NO, it is not possible to use the nav screen's built-in controls with any aftermarket DVD system. Before I resign myself to the unpleasant kludge of separate controls, do any of the experts on this list know better?

I also note that with the stock system, it's possible to watch the movie on the nav screen when the vehicle is stopped. That would be nice too, but not a necessity.

We just purchased a 2006 Limited 4Runner without NAV and without Rear Entertainment, has the JBL Synthesis, 10 speaker radio with a DISC/AUX button that is supposed to switch between CD input, DVD input (if attached) and AUX input.

We did not get the FACTORY DVD because we wanted a bigger screen.

From the manual, it appears that the radio supports DVD in addition to XM Radio in addition to AUX input.

But, I have talked with the Parts guy, the Sales, guy, the Service guy and Tweeter/AUdio Associates/ Best Buy, and no one can answer whether a DVD can be connected directly to the head unit. I called Toyota and they said to ask the local dealer. I asked the local dealer and they were of no help.

So I am very interested but also confused.

Any DVD player can be connected to the AUX input of the stereo, so you can listen to it. But I'm hopeful that someone on here knows whether tighter integration is possible: using the head unit's software for controlling and watching the factory entertainment system, but with an aftermarket unit.

Connecting DVD to AUX input

If you connect a DVD player to the AUX input, how do you select whether DVD or MP3?? All I care about is sound and using the HU to pick the input. I don't need to use HU to control the DVD player.

Could you elaborate a little more for someone still learning?

My radio has a DISC/AUX button that is supposed to toggle between CD, DVD and AUX. If you connect a DVD player to the AUX input, will this button work?

If so, how would you recommend connecting the DVD to the AUX?
