Stock intake silencer/baffles removed?

I'm gonna grab the parts at Lowe's some time this week and try it out. It shouldn't hurt anything.

You basically just need two 2 3/8" Post Caps Lowe's Part # 92186. The guy over at FJ Cruiser painted his black to better match the stock piping. If anything I might get a more throaty growl when I hit the gas. Worth the $4 IMO for that. Might also remove the cotton thing above the stock filter media as well and see what that does.

One thing they did note was that they just capped the vacuum line and I'm not sure if this will be a bad thing. I could always drill out a hole in one of that post caps and put the vacuum line there perhaps. This is what the vacuum line goes to courtesy of TOYSTRY's TRD CAI post. I posted this- http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/84211-diy-airbox-mod.html - a while ago and got blasted for it. I've since added an aluminum heat shield. Those caps would be the next logical step. I would definitely find a way to hookup those vacuum lines though...

^^Haha, Yeah I remember when you posted that. You got blasted for cutting up the stock air box. I'm planning on leaving my airbox intact and just get rid of the resonators. As long as I find a way to keep that vacuum hose connected, I shouldn't get flamed too much. Fingers crossed!

After driving 300 miles to Vegas and 300 miles back, I see no reason to spend $400 (yet) on a TRD intake even though they look awesome. My 4Runner did great on the freeway up hill, down hill, etc. I just figured this post cap thing matched to my AFE Dry Filter and Magnaflow muffler would net some nice Throaty acceleration sounds. That's pretty much all I'm after at the moment.

Yeah I did it. One of the first things that I did. If you smooth everything out, you basically are making your own TRD intake. It does not look as pretty, but in the end accomplishes the same thing. Get rid of those two boxes that disrupt airflow, and if you want to take it a step further, replace the pipe from the airbox to the intake.

I put a cone filter on at first and have since replaced with an AFE dry filter. This really is exactly what the TRD intake is. They have gotten rid of the two boxes and smoothed out the pipes going to the intake. 20 bucks and a trip to Home Depot and you are set

Ok I did this on Saturday. The bigger silencer had a larger opening than the smaller one for some reason. Anyway's The post cap fit perfect in the opening closest to the filter, whereas the other one closest to the TB was a little smaller than the post cap. I used a rubber mallet and hit the aluminum cap all the way around to make the diameter a little smaller. I was able to squeeze it into the opening but was a tight fit. As far as the vacuum connection, just picked up a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter and drilled/ tapped the post cap and screwed it in. Also picked up a little longer vacuum hose.

First impression, yes you can kinda hear the engine suck in the air while your accelerating, I don't think it affected the exhaust noise at all. After all the supplies it was about a $10 mod, so you can't go wrong. It definitely will not hurt performance any.

The fitment issue for the post cap into the smaller diameter intake tube opening was bugging me so yesterday I used the rubber mallet again to try and make the post cap a tad thinner. Well, the aluminum cap cracked and I had to temporarily put the stock baffles back on.

Iv'e tried searching the internet for a lightly smaller post cap but seems unlikely I'll find one. Either I'll have a custom cap made by the machine shop guy here at my work or I'll wait for AFE's intake to become available.

Oh and in my earlier post I thought that was an EGR valve, its actually a Fuel Pressure Regulator.

Wonder if the TRD intake tube could be used with the stock cai. TRD intake tube is available as a separate part, TRD Replacement Intake Air Tube for CAI PTR03-89100-AA.

Looking at the pictures alone I would tend to think that it would not fit due to the approach angle to stock air box. I don't want to get rid of the stock fj air box as I really like the added protection that the cyclonic filter provides.

will i did this mod today. and i just got a K&N from amazon for 43$ and i am going to detroit from va so its like 900mi and ill post my mpg when i get there.
it was like 20$ for all the stuff i needed to do this mod

so from detroit to va. my first tank i got 470mi. thats about 20mpg's going about 65mpr !!!! so with the air box mod and a k&n. i think it was worth the 70. :boink: it will pay for itself in a few more tanks.
