Stock security/alarm......

When I bought my 98 SR5 I received 3 metal keys from the dealer. No alarm fob. Obviously I have the security light by my E brake but it has never turned on. I of course since installed an after market remote start/alarm. Now I don't have history on it if it has been disconnected. Any ideas on checking it cause I don't want it to suddenly engage and then I'm screwed. I've towed a few cars to the shop for this. I also want to put a LED there to point at the center dash area and thought if this doesn't work anymore, might as well make use of the space.....

Anyone put a light there to illuminate the center dash area or something like that?

It's not a security light. It's a sensor that is "supposed" to sense glass breakage. Never seen one actually work though.

Do you have stickers on your windows saying

This car is protected by Toyota alarm systems, or something?

I am not sure of your exact toyota alarm but for the Limiteds it actually is a security light. Your horn (alarm) will go off if the system is activated (by locking the car..) if a door is forcibly opened or if you unlock the door somehow without the key or the remote.

How i know:
I somehow pressed the lock on my keyfob while sitting in my driveway and was in there for a few minutes.. i unlocked my driver door and the alarm went off.

Being a 98 his should have the rs3000 dealer installed alarm. In 99 the keyless entry and alarm started appearing on the 4runner from the factory. The piece by the parking brake is the alarm armed light and the glass breakage sensor. If you have a box under the seat you should be able to get a remote and use the alarm.

Leave it alone if it is working.

The factory alarm won't suddenly engage and then disable the car.

You can simply override the factory alarm with the basic key. Just turn it to ignition twice when factory Alarm is going off. Wow magic ... its disabled and car starts normally. I have a 1997, all factory.

As far as I know it isn't working. Unless the light is out. Guess I'll leave it. Figure out something else for the LED......

Thanks!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I need help.

I was installing a set of fog lights on my 98 SR5 and had the battery disconnected. Now when I go to reconnect the negative terminal, the alarm starts going off immediatley. I bought it used 6 months ago and never had a key fob, the spot on the e-brake where the security light is supposed to be was gone from the get-go (meaning I can just see down to the mechanical under the ebrake)

It has the window stickers saying "protected by toyota VIP"

How do I disable this? Is it just turning the key in the ignition a few times or can I just disconnect the alarm from the box under the driver seat?

edit: now that I actually look there is no black box under the driver seat

I tried turning the key from Off to On multiple times while the alarm was going off and nothing happened so now my truck is sitting half in - half out of my garage with the battery unhooked until I can figure out what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
