my 4runner came with the stock, single disc head unit with the basic 6 speaker system. i felt no need for paying extra for the jbl system since i plan on getting an aftermarket system anyways. my question is, can this stock head unit handle an aftermarket amp and sub? anybody have any specs on the head unit?

I think you can make it work but keep in mind, the standard single disc player (I think) had a built in amplifier. You will have to also purchase Line Converters that will convert you amplified signal from your head unit to line level inputs for your new amps. I would suggest you have a pofessional stereo installer do it for you.

This is possible but you will get much better results (better sounding) from any aftermarket headunit.

Thanks. I know that is true. It's just that i'm trying to save up for a dvd player. I figured that til then, a sub and amp will be good enough.

TranceKrayz,

I am thinking of doing the same thing, any suggestions on aftermarket sub and amp?

Thanks.

I'm still trying to decide. Since i plan on getting a kenwood dvd player, i'm thinking of doing an all kenwood system. so the first thing i may get is a kenwood excelon 10 inch sub (maybe 2 if i figure out the second location), and a kenwood mono amp. i plan on getting the sub custom installed into the passenger side panel of the cargo area so that i do not lose much cargo space. This will also provide for a much cleaner look than getting a box. It'll kind of look like the jl audio stealthbox, but it'll be incorporated into the panel so that i can still use the double decker cargo system. do you have any idea on what sub and amp you may be getting?
