Stolen Cat, Help.

So I go to leave work today and come to find that someone has stolen something from my truck. Start the truck and it sounds like I put a V8 under the hood.:confused: My first thought was that i blew the gaskets on my newly installed header, nope. While at work someone sawzalled off my cat.

They were however polite enough to cut it just after the 02 Sensor. FL is a no emissions state so I am thinking about just getting some pipe welded in it's place. Thoughts? Should I report it to the Police?

I would absolutely report it. I would also check surrounding businesses to see if any have security cameras to see if you can get a shot of the thief.
 
Always good to report it in case there is a pattern the police might be able to catch. I had my tire stolen a few weeks ago. This kind of stuff is a pain. Sorry to hear about that. It is something I worry about here.
 
Reported. So what should I do about fixing the issue? What you you do if your state had no emissions ?
 
This has been said countless times but just FYI ...

Your engine will run ruff, throw codes and get horrible mileage without a cat.

Use the link in my signature "how to search" for links on aftermarket (affordable) cats that will work and pass smog.
 
Get a new CAT off Rockauto.com. They are pretty cheap, and you can probably get a new one put in for under $200 total. I used Eastern Catalytic CAT's (I have 2 due to CA emissions) and they work well enough to turn off my engine light.
 
Reported, called insurance, they are wanting to either total the vehicle or give me some cheap after market. Thinking about getting pipe in for now then saving and getting a decent after market or scan gauge to keep an eye on codes.

Don't let them total it!

If it's in good shape a cat is nothing but a salvage title sux. Of course if never intend to sell it who care right?

Totaling a vehicle for a $200 cat? Seems a little odd. I live in STL and this is happening all over the city and surrounding counties.
 
They would total it for the OEM replacement cost, estimated installed $2,690. They said they might be able to do a used or aftermarket one but from what i have read / heard they just throw codes. So I am going to save some hard earned green backs and put something in to bridge it all for the time being.
 
I would put in an aftermarket cat. no biggie. or look on one of the toyota oem parts sites if your are worried about it,

Once again if you don't mind a salvage title go ahead and take that cash and then find a reasonable replacement.

I'm sure a search here will reveal a good close to OEM replacement for a fraction of that. I don't quite get that price…. I used to hang out at a buddies exhaust shop and they would tack on mufflers quickly. I can't imagine a cat being more difficult and taking that much more expertise if any. I thought a oem was like $800…..

I said, "Its not what you think." She said, "I hope it had a micro chip collar."

I had to stare at her for a little to ensure she wasn't screwing with me...

That is okay, some of the guys here at work made me flyers for my missing cat... I have been tempted to print a couple out and tape them to my windows on the truck so the little B@$tard who did it sees it. Also been thinking about using one of or CNC's to create a little tag i can hang from some chains down there with some choice words on it. That's one of my fears about replacing it with a brand new one or one at all, the booger did it at my place of work in broad day light, he / she would do it again. Then I am in the same situation.

I don't understand why they would total it. You can get a cat for $50 depending on what website you go to and max $300. It should only be a couple hundred max to weld it on.

Also, if you get a new cat, you should get the Catlock.

Haha, I showed my girlfriend the flyer, too funny. That stinks about the theft though. There are a good number of threads on here from the PNW areas about cat thefts and tire thefts, even to vehicle thefts.

I would consider getting a decent catalytic converter, possibly from RockAuto, and then purchasing this:

It'll make the thief move to the next car. That's all you can really do.
Or you can sit in your truck with a 12 gauge and wait for them. Although your work productivity might suffer. :D

Haha, I've been waiting since yesterday to offer that one up! I couldn't do it on my phone though, so I had to wait until I got home and could use the comp. :yo:

That happens with blue collar workers who have vans and trucks for their job site duties. They steal your tools and then when you buy new ones, they steal them again. Happened to a friend of mine who is an electrician. They tagged his van multiple times and then stole his tools... twice. It doesn't help that the company logo is on it. It's like a big bullseye.
