I work in a bad neighborhood in chicago and I recently had my catalytic converter stolen off of my 98 4runner sr5. I also had one stolen of my old 87 4x4. Does anyone know about a guard I can buy so this doesn't happen again? What if I make my own, are there any heat issues I should worry about? I don't want running boards. Thanks.

Yeah I had my cat jacked last night apparently this has been going on for quite a while and doesn't seem to be coming to an end. I guess we're going to weld the new cat on and create a skid plate that will run along the bottom of the exhaust. We have to research the heat issue though. And where it'll bolt up, may have to spot weld this too or at least make the bolts an PIA to get to.

not in Cali, granted that looking under a old 4runner isn't top priority for the LAPD, the fact that its easy to do should make you think a little.

test pipe arent always good. stock non turbo/SC motor need some backpressure. you will loose power if its not force fed. Also sooner or later you would need to put it back on for smog check.

I asked the dealer about this issue and i thought he told me you would probably use more gas and that the engine would not run that great. I would be interested to hear if anyone has tried and what happened. I know there are 2 O2 sensors before and after the cat.

So IS there a skid plate that can be mounted under the truck to at least deter these crackheads? They stole mine off my 98 while I was at my office.
Has anyone used the catclamp? I can't see how that would work any better... if they are just chopping the pipes off with a sawzall in 2-3 minutes... why would some 1/4 inch cable stop them... wouldn't they just cut them too?
I'd prefer a skid plate option but can't seem to locate any and doubt I can convince my insurance company to pay for a custom made item.

No personal experience, but I am guessing only 0.1% of the population has the cables so if you had them they could easily find another victim. Sort of like finding an unsecured wireless network. Why bother with a secured one, when there are a million unsecured ones around.
Then again they might just spend more time tearing your car apart getting through the cables.

I got my cat clamp in today. I'll post some pics and results after I install it. (sorry for bumping an old thread)
