This is a Russian devices that starts every car of any makes. They show the device around 3:10. This was in 2011 imagine now... The other way is at the dealership some guys get orders for a particular model and colour. They make a copy of your key and don't forget they know exactly where you live from your file in the computer.
P.s Sorry the video is in French it's the only one I found to show the device. This device is really rare and cost an arm and a leg.

It could do a lot of good. You could get the license plate or a good idea of the vehicle they drove up in. Even at night a good 3 or 5 mp cameras can get great video. Two cameras zoomed from different angles to the driveway and at least one overall view of the front yard. If they happen to look up and see the cameras it would probably deter them from stealing it in the first place.
If you happen to be up and have a monitor within view you might even catch them in the act.
With a NVR it's all recorded so you can go back and see what happened. You can easily place it on a thumb drive to give it to the cops (EDIT: Mounties) and post on the forums instead of just text.
Maybe I just like to look at my 4Runner from my computer room.

I didn't read it again but as I recall the owner actually found it parked on the road somewhere fairly close to his house. Dealer employees were suspect in the theft.

Sorry to hear about your car.
Cameras kind depend on your police department. I had my garage broken into and about $6,000 worth of stuff stolen a few years ago. The dude's cousin was his getaway driver and turned him in - to me at my house. Strange to say the least, but it was all on my camera over the door. She was called at 2am to pick him up and figured he must have been stealing stuff and came back with one of my saws. Anyway I had the guys home address, phone number, name, and an eye witness account on video.
Want to guess what happened? Not a damn thing. Warrant was issued within a week. Found my bike at a pawn shop about 3 days after. It's a custom bike built off a bare frame so it's totally unique and easy to identify. (It's still there - thanks Utah lawmakers!). He was finally arrested about 2 years later. Released without bail after an arraignment hearing. Never showed up again. Our justice system is a joke. They couldn't care less about property crime.
I still have cameras to watch my dogs mostly. But I have no faith at all in my police. Even if they know exactly who did it, where the car is, you STILL might not get it back. Good insurance is about the only option. Or vigilante justice.

Damn I am sorry to hear this.. Read through the entire thread and its crazy how people can still steal cars / trucks even with security. 
I think of Gone in 60 seconds. Anything they want they can take. That's a huge bummer man.. I have a Honda Civic and was hoping once I get out of it that I could stop worrying my car will be stolen at any moment. It's one of the top thefts here in MN. I guess the security footage wouldn't help with all police but maybe it would help with Insurance. I like the idea of that phone tracker device.

Still, not sure what that means. For some reason, the 2017 4Runner has not been release in Canada.
Keep in mind that I live in Canada. If and when we catch crooks, we give them hugs and maple syrup.

Nothing happens down here either. Random thieves almost never get caught unless it is during the actual act of stealing. Now if an individual or group decides to go on a crime spree in a small geographic area over several weeks or months then they will sometimes get caught.
Bottom line... if someone wants what you have bad enough they will get it and get away with it unless they get caught in the act. Alarms, locks and cameras are to deter the amateurs. Pros will just laugh.

I paid cash for mine and insisted that my insurance agent get me coverage with not only comp & collision but also new car replacement. She then informed me that the new car coverage does not include theft! Why? Fraud. Too many people having friends take their car, then making claims. Iceholes 1 : Honest folks 0.
I should invent a system that can be wired in to require a personal security code, set by the owner only, be input before ignition can be allowed. Like the security key on a wireless network. 12 random characters ought to do it. Sure it would be a pain in the donkey but it would defeat this crap.

I also have a 2015 4Runner in blizzard pearl and I live in Brockton, MA ghetto city but for me I have an advantage 5 dogs and close neighbors !

Encrypting the ECU, not the key, should be what manufacturer's are aiming for.
I mean, the FBI can't even access my $700 iPhone without my pin or thumb print. Why doesn't my $35,000 T4R have the same setup?
Of course that won't stop what probably happened to the OP anyway - loading that ***** up on a flatbed and driving off but if they couldn't start the engine without significant replacement of parts whats the point?
