When I had a wrangler with rooftop storage I used these and will likely again on my 4runner when I get a roof rack.
Rubbermaid Brute storage
They are well made and the harder plastic than most Rubbermaid products. Not all stores carry them if you want to go look first.
- The handle could really be ratcheted down to the basket and survive real 4x4ing out to a campsite and a LOT of lateral movement fully loaded. It would deform a bit but no worries on a break.
- the lid presses down and over the top so you can use closed cell weather stripping on the lid to near dust proof them.
- Since the lid overlay-ed the top fully, you could collect water on the top but meh it's not getting in.
- Even though it was a really tight fit there is no latch so I did use a single bungie cord to ensure they stayed put.
It's not a perfect solution but really cheap and weather proof for those only going camping 2-3 times a year.
