Storage space under sliding cargo tray

Id like to get a little extra storage space under my sliding cargo tray. has anyone cutout the carpet in the center? How much space did you gain. Right now between the carpet and the bottom of the tray I have about 1 1/2" Id like to get at least 2 - 2 1/2" inches.

keep us posted...i would like to utilize that space as well for rarely need emergency type stuff.

I store bunch of stuff (jumper cables, trench shovel, air hose...) right on that carpeted square. There is enough clearance for my needs without need to remove that and rattle free as a bonus.

Storage under sliding cargo tray.

My new Runner does not have the tray. I used to slide it as far out as I could and then place flat items (jumper cables, ropes, tarps, straps, etc.)under the tray then slide it back.
