strange rattling that i cannot diagnose

randomly started today and it is intermittent, first noticed when turning a corner at low speed and thought it was possibly the clock spring in the steering wheel. but it seems the clicking sound has a mind of its own and i cannot replicate it. it does it at all different intervals and sometimes it is one click and other times it is 3 or 4 clicks back to back.

sounds like it is coming from under the dash near the OBD2 connector and fuse block or in the driver side door. hard to explain other than a click, it sounds almost like a switch of some sort. any ideas on where i should start? it is fairly audible and driving me insane, my biggest pet peeve in cars is a noisy interior.

one rattle that threw me off as to where it was coming from was the sound the rear folding seat makes when it is not fully latched. It sounded as if it was coming from outside of the truck and at other times sounded like it was in the passenger floor board. check the back seats, u never know, could be the problem.
 
i havent adjusted the rear seat since i owned the truck but i will give anything a shot. pretty positive it is coming from the front of the vehicle though. i can even hear it when the vehicle is in park and i am standing outside with the door open.

Mine too. Turn your radio up louder!

Couldn't resist. My wife thinks I'm anal because I can hear noises she can't and the noise bugs me to death until I find and destroy them!

yes, the wife and i almost got in a fight because she couldnt hear the noise i was hearing. it is VERY audible IMO
 
No idea, but there is a couple relays down under the dash in that area. Haven't seen it yet on the 4Runner but they do make a click similar to your description just before they go. I suggest checking it for any codes that could come up.

a relay is EXACTLY what it sounds like, exactly what relays are down there? i saw a bunch of wires and harnesses, not all of them hooked up though.

Hey, me as well, I lived with that for two years! I thought it was something in the tailgate. And most know about the sunglasses-in-the-overhead storage sounding like it comes from the glovebox. On this particular SUV, the rattles often seem to not be where the sounds are.
 
im with HUSKEY

are your turn signals and emergency lights working ok? i havent had to dig in to mine yet but i would bet the 4r has some type of flasher or relay down by the fuse box. the flasher will probably be a circular object with about the diameter of a quarter.

sometimes they click intermittently when they are going bad. pull the flasher and see if it still does it. quick fix, swap your emergency flasher in to your turn signal flasher slot until you can get a new one (assuming the 4r has 2... alot of vehicles do).
 
Turn signals are working I assume because I use them and don't get a hyper flash, have not tried to use my hazard lights but would suspect they are on the same relay as the blinkers. I will check tonight after dinner
 
Sorry nothing to contribute but to say I have the same rattle. It only does it occasionally but it drives me crazy when it does. Never made a post because I assumed it was some of my aftermarket wiring rattling on something until I saw how many others have the problem.

Mine does it when sitting still (running) just as much as when driving.

well dammit i will get to the end of this, it is unacceptable
 
so i pin pointed the noise to being under the driver seat. i only have power lumbar which doesnt even work…but there are about 5 connectors under there. i am assuming some sort of air bag sensor or seat belt tensioner...
 
Nice, let us know if you find it!! Mine hasn't been clicking lately for me to investigate and it usually seems to only do it in situations where I can't possibly search for it (interstate, traffic, etc.)

On a side not, my power lumbar doesn't work either, so it may be worth looking into the wiring for that.
 
I have all the wiring diagrams, but there a bit difficult to navigate... If you look around I believe the full set is on the forum (or maybe 120?) in pdf. That's where I got mine.
 
Every vehicle owner must own a Haines manual for each vehicle s/he owns. The 4th gen book has excellent wireing diagrams. Thak book will pretty much show you how to strip your vehicle down to nothing and then build it back up again.
