As best I can tell I have not run into anyone that has had this same problem.
To start off I will keep it short, as I have looked into a number of possible causes I will not list them all at this point.
I have an 89 4runner with a 22-RE. It would not start in the winter when cold (starter turns over strong), when I put it in my warm garage (+10 or so) it would start most of the time. As it is a manual I am able to start it at any temperature by pulling it and popping the clutch, bypassing the regualr ignition/starter process. once the engine is warm it will start using the ignition.
Now that it is warmer I thought it would start, figureing it was the cold start timer/ injector, it still doesn't start. Both the timer and injector have since then turned out to be functional. I checked the EFI relay it is good (according to resistance readings in the hanes manual). I cleaned the distributor and swapped out the coil from my parts runner.
I do not have spark when cranking the engine but if I pull start it and pull a plug wire it obviously does. why would I get spark during pull start and not ignition/ cranking?
has anyone heard of a problem similar to his? could it be an issue with the starter drawing too much current away from the electrical system.
Please help I am running out of ideas and really want to get it up and running!
