I don't ever smell my exhaust, and I frequently use my rear window; more so than not. Maybe having the rear spoiler makes a difference while driving, but even idling or crawling I've had more dust and dirt in my lungs than exhaust.
There are a quite a few things that can relate to strong exhaust smell. Injectors, plugs, MAF, FPR, Cat. Converters, 02 sensors, exhaust leak, EGR system... it really just comes down to pinpointing it and the best way is cheapest things first.
